The final contested Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge against Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis . The "Woodies" won in three sets and were able to defend their title. This was their second triumph at the US Open (after 1995 ) and their seventh joint Grand Slam title overall.
