The University of West Brittany ( French Université de Bretagne occidentale , UBO) is a state university in Brest (France) and has locations in Brest , Quimper , Morlaix , Rennes , Saint-Brieuc and Vannes .
It is a spin-off from the University of Rennes in 1971. Around 20,000 students study at the university. The university gains international importance through the affiliated European Institute for Marine Studies (Institut universitaire européen de la mer , IUEM).
history
From the end of the 1950s, the University of Rennes opened further locations and facilities in the region. In the 1960s, the foundation stone for a traditional full university was laid with institutes in the fields of law, natural sciences, humanities and medicine. The actual trigger, however, were the events of May 1968 : The University of Rennes was split into Rennes 1 and Rennes 2 and the University of West Brittany became an independent university on January 1, 1971.
From the 1980s onwards, UBO itself played a role in establishing the University of South Brittany as the fourth Breton university.
