Washington (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Washington is a male given name and a family name (see also -ton ).

Origin and Distribution

The name ([ ˈwɒʃɪŋtən ]) refers to George Washington (1732–1799), the first President of the United States of America.

The name itself is an origin name and refers to place names in England, such as Washington (Tyne and Wear) , from which the ancestors of George Washington probably come, and Washington (West Sussex) . Early mentions can be found in Tyne and Wear as early as 1096 as Old English Wasindone . The etymological origin of the name is controversial. It could mean English washing , washing ', Old English wascan , even more primitive waesc , water , and dūn ' hill '(see dune ) (' [settlement on] hill by the river '). In addition, Wassyngtona is also documented in 1183 , which is derived from Old English * Hwæsingatūn , a nickname meaning 'white sheep' and tūn 'boundary' (compare town ' settlement , locality ', German  fence ) ('settlement of people of Wassa ').

The word became a family name when William de Hertburn called himself William de Wassyngtona in 1183. In 1657 the name came to Virginia; From 1789 to 1797 George Washington was President. Since then, this first name has been widespread throughout the USA as patriotic , but is found worldwide as an Americanophile creed. In addition to a genealogical origin, the name is also (as with Abraham Lincoln and other people who have made a contribution to the liberation of slaves in the USA ) as an accepted name of released slaves - and hence the family name of their descendants - widespread among African Americans .

The name also serves as a male given name , often as a second or third name in honor of George Washington.
