William Patterson (politician, 1789)

William Patterson (born June 4, 1789 in Londonderry , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , †  August 14, 1838 in Warsaw , New York ) was an American politician . In 1837 and 1838 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Patterson was the older brother of the Congressman and Lieutenant Governor of New York, George Washington Patterson (1799–1879), and an uncle of Augustus Frank (1826–1895), who was also a Congressman from New York. He attended the public schools in his home country. In 1815 he moved to Rensselaerville, New York State, and a year later to Lyons , where he worked in the craft. From 1822 he lived on a farm near Warsaw in Wyoming County . There he worked in agriculture. In 1837 he moved straight to the city of Warsaw, where he held a number of local offices.

Politically, Patterson joined the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1836 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded George W. Lay on March 4, 1837 . He was able to exercise this mandate until his death on August 14, 1838.
