The Gelsenkirchen Science Park (initially referred to as the Rheinelbe Science Park) is a project of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park , located at Munscheidstrasse 14 in Gelsenkirchen . Under the motto “Working in the Park”, a 300-meter-long glass building with several office wings was built on the site of the former Gelsenkirchen cast steel and ironworks Munscheid & Co in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf . Immediately adjacent to the building, a small park with a lake has been created, which has quickly developed into a popular local recreation destination. There is a solar power plant on the roof of the building (Photovoltaic system ). The originally planned second construction phase and the addition of a hall for congresses to the structure were not carried out.

layout

The science park was designed by the Munich architect Prof. Uwe Kiessler . In 1995 the building and its urban planning concept was awarded the German Architecture Prize of the Federal Chamber of Architects . The American light artist Dan Flavin designed the science park .

use

Companies and research institutions in particular from the fields of energy technology, information and communication technology and health management have settled in the science park, including the Labor and Technology Institute at the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences, several municipal departments (Economic Development Department, Institute for Urban History) and the Gelsenkirchen Labor Court , which until 2016 was housed in the former administration building of the steel mill.

Various exhibitions, smaller trade fairs and receptions take place in the 300-meter-long glass corridor. Among other things, the new recordings of the " Ruhrgebiet Pixel Project ", a regional photographic collection, are exhibited here every year . In 2008, the Gelsenkirchen Science Park and the photographer Peter Liedtke initiated the project "Bildsprache" (bild. Sprachen). The aim of the project is to present exhibitions of regional photographers and photo designers on a regular basis, to organize an annual fair as a communication platform between photographers and image takers, and to offer lectures and seminars on photographic topics.
