history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . The name Ybbsitz is first mentioned in 1107 and is of Slavic origin, which, like other place names in the region, suggests an early Slavic settlement. In the 12th century, a parish was founded by the Seitenstetten Abbey , around which a place developed, which in 1480 by Emperor Friedrich III. the market right was granted.

Due to the proximity to the Styrian Erzberg , the abundance of forests and the natural water power , Ybbsitz developed into a local center for iron processing of the Eisenwurzen, which flourished in the 16th century. Numerous well-preserved monuments of mining history still testify to the former economic importance of the place and are now integrated into tourism concepts.

Ybbsitz is a member of the Ring of European Blacksmithing Cities , which has set itself the goal of promoting the regional diversity of the blacksmithing trade and metal design within the unity of Europe at all levels.

Probably in the middle of the 20th century. a meteorite fell on the Prochenberg .

In 2010, forging in Ybbsitz was included in the register of intangible cultural heritage in Austria .
