Zucchero
Zucchero ( [ˈdzukkero] ; born September 25, 1955 in Roncocesi near Reggio nell'Emilia as Adelmo Fornaciari ), also known as Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari , is an Italian singer , multi-instrumentalist and songwriter . His music, which he performs in Italian and English , is inspired by gospel , blues and rock music . He is considered the "father of the Italian blues". His stage name, the Italian word for sugar , goes back to the name given by a primary school teacher. In Italy he topped the album charts a total of 13 times. In 2006 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Komtur) for his services .
Life
Fornaciari began his musical activity in 1970 with the band Le Nuove Luci , with whom he performed in pubs until 1978. Other formations in which he was active were Sugar & Daniel and Sugar & Candies . In 1981 the singer won the Castrocaro Festival with the song Canto te ; the following year he presented Una notte che vola via at the Sanremo Festival in 1982 . In 1983 he returned to Sanremo with Nuvola and subsequently released his debut album Un po 'di Zucchero . The hoped-for success did not materialize, which is why Zucchero presented another song at the Sanremo Festival in 1985 with a stronger rhythm and blues influence and support from the Randy Jackson Band : Donne . Despite the poor performance in the competition, Zucchero achieved its first sales success. This was followed by the album Zucchero & The Randy Jackson Band .
Only the third album by the musician, Rispetto , earned him a chart placement. The previous participation in the Sanremo Festival 1986 with Canzone triste was, however, another failure. The final breakthrough came in 1987 with the fourth album Blue’s : This reached the top of the charts for the first time and was named album of the year in the festival bar competition. The best- known single from it was Senza una donna . After a short detour into the film sector in 1988 with the soundtrack for Tinto Brass ' film Snack Bar Budapest , Zucchero released another album in 1989, Oro incenso & birra , which once again surpassed the success of its predecessor and remained at the top of the for a full 20 weeks Album charts held. This was followed by an extensive tour. Zucchero also teamed up with fellow musicians Dodi Battaglia , Maurizio Vandelli , Fio Zanotti , Michele Torpedine and Umbi Maggi to form the short-lived group Adelmo ei suoi Sorapis , which released the album Walzer d'un Blues in 1993.
The live album Live at the Kremlin emerged from two concerts that Zucchero gave in 1990 in the Moscow Kremlin . In 1991 he recorded a new version of Senza una donna with Paul Young , which made the song his most internationally known hit. The following year, Zucchero was the only Italian singer to appear at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert ; he sang the song Las palabras de amor . This also began the musical collaboration and friendship with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor . Zucchero's sixth studio album Miserere was released in 1992 and was able to build on the successes; The musician recorded the title track with Luciano Pavarotti , with whom he then appeared at the first edition of the Pavarotti & Friends concert series.
At the 1993 World Music Awards , Zucchero was recognized as the most successful Italian performer, and in 1994 he was the only participant from Italy at the Woodstock II concert . The album Spirito DiVino followed , and in 1996 Zucchero's first Best Of was released. At the invitation of Sting , Zucchero performed in 1997 at a benefit concert in Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Rainforest Foundation , where he performed his own version of the popular Verdi -Arie Va, pensiero . This brought him great success in the single charts, which Zucchero was able to repeat in Italy with Blu , the first single from the next studio album Bluesugar , which just missed the top of the chart. With Baila (Sexy Thing) the musician had his first number one hit in 2001, which was followed by the album Shake .
With Zu & Co. , Zucchero presented an album at a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2004 , on which he played new and old songs in a duet with international stars such as Sting, Miles Davis , Dolores O'Riordan , Vanessa Carlton , Maná and Macy Gray sang; In addition to Italy, it also reached the top of the charts in Austria and Switzerland. The single Il grande Baboomba (with Mousse T. ) became a summer hit in Italy and won the festival bar competition. As part of the worldwide Live 8 benefit concerts on July 2, 2005, Zucchero performed in both Rome and Paris . The next studio album Fly was produced by Don Was and was released in 2006. Following the following world tour, the musician also released the Best of All the Best in 2007 and the live album Live in Italy in 2008 .
When Zucchero's daughter Irene Fornaciari first took part in the Sanremo Festival in 2009, Zucchero revived Adelmo ei suoi Sorapis with Dodi Battaglia, Maurizio Vandelli and Fio Zanotti and performed together with Irene in Sanremo. The next studio album, Chocabeck , was released in 2010, but in 2011 the musician published his autobiography Il suono della domenica . This was followed in 2012 by La sesión cubana , an album recorded in Havana on which the musician presented his own songs in a new arrangement as well as covers and a few new songs; an Italian version of the classic Guantanamera was released as the first single . The concert, recorded during the following world tour in Cuba, was included in the 2013 album Una rosa blanca . In 2015 Zucchero took part in the solidarity concert Voices for Refugees in Vienna.
In 2016 a new studio album was released with Black Cat . This includes u. a. the song Streets of Surrender (SOS) , written by Bono , about the terrorist attacks in Paris and the refugee crisis ; Zucchero took on Mark Knopfler .
