Apple Records
Apple Records is a music label . It was founded in 1968 by the Beatles and belonged as a subdivision to Apple Corps . The label's logo is a Granny Smith apple .
Label history
At the time of their founding, the Beatles were contractually bound to Parlophone or EMI (in Great Britain ), to Capitol Records (in the USA ) and to Odeon Records in Germany (distributed by EMI). In a new contract it was agreed that EMI and Capitol would take over the distribution for Apple Records until 1975. The rights to all publications of the Beatles on their Apple label remained with EMI. Apple Records would only own the rights to those artists the label signed.
Artists signed by Apple Records included Badfinger , Mary Hopkin , James Taylor , Billy Preston , Jackie Lomax, Ravi Shankar and the Modern Jazz Quartet . In addition, the Beatles' solo releases appeared on the Apple label and on the sub-label "Zapple Records" by 1975.
The first Beatles record to appear on the Apple label was the single Hey Jude (August 1968). The label's first album was George Harrison's solo project "Wonderwall Music" (November 1, 1968), the music for the film Wonderwall . Shortly afterwards - on November 11, 1968 - the first joint album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono , Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins, was released . The Beatles' first LP to bear the Apple logo was the so-called White Album , which was released on November 22, 1968.
