The district of Bardiya ( Nepali तनहू जिल्ला) is one of 77 districts in Nepal .

It is located in the Bheri administrative zone on the border with India . Most of Bardiyas is occupied by the Terai plain . The Bardiya National Park occupies the northern half of the district with 968 km². The majority of the population is Tharu .

The district in 2001 has 382,649 residents; In 2011 it was 426,576.

history

Bardiya was part of the Kingdom of Gorkha when it was ceded to Great Britain ( India ) in the Treaty of Sugauli in 1815 . Under the government of Jang Bahadur Rana , it was returned to Nepal with Banke , Kailali and Kanchanpur in 1860 .
