In the 1987/88 season the Biathlon World Cup was held for the 11th time. The competition series in the biathlon consisted of five individual, five sprint and four relay races for men and women and was held at five venues. In addition to the five World Cup events in Hochfilzen , Antholz , Ruhpolding , Oslo and Jyväskylä , the 1988 Winter Olympics took place in Calgary, Canada , for men and the 1988 Biathlon World Championships in Chamonix, France, for womeninstead, the results were not included in the World Cup ranking. This was the first official World Cup in which women also started. Fritz Fischer won the overall world cup for men ahead of Eirik Kvalfoss and Johann Passler for women Anne Elvebakk ahead of Elin Kristiansen and Nadeschda Alexiewa . The sprint and relay races could not be held in Hochfilzen because rain had destroyed the track. The sprint race was made up for before the races in Jyväskylä in Keuruu, Finland.
