Bonito , officially Município de Bonito , is a city in the Pantanal in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul .

According to the 2010 census, the community had 19,789 inhabitants, who are called Bonitenser. It is in 29th place in the municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul in terms of population. The city is of great importance for ecotourism in Brazil. The city is the starting point for trips to the Serra da Bodoquena National Park . Bonito lies in the middle of the region, which is called the Caribbean of the Midwest because of the intense blue of its waters . Due to the high lime content of the soil, the water of the rivers is very heavily filtered. This is why the rivers in the area are among the clearest in the world. A number of fish and plant species have adapted to the calcareous environment, so that the rivers are teeming with life. The government is committed to ecotourism and limits the number of tourists allowed in the city. This is to preserve the natural condition and the beauty of the landscape.

history

The spot that was later to become the center of the municipality of Bonito was part of the Rincão Bonito Fazenda with an area of about 27 km². It was acquired by Mr. Euzébio Captain Luiz da Costa Leite Falcão in 1869. He is considered to be the founder of Bonito and also became its first notary .

By federal law number 693 of June 11, 1915, the Paz de Bonito district was established with an area that was separated from the municipality of Miranda , but remained administratively subordinate to it. On September 21, 1943, it was incorporated into the Paz de Miranda district. Another law stipulated that it was assigned to the state of Mato Grosso . The town of Bonito was founded on October 2, 1948 by the Provincial Law No. 145.

In 1977 the city was incorporated into the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

climate

The rainy season is from February to April. Many places are then very difficult to reach.

Attractions

Bonito relies on ecotourism, not mass tourism. The sights are made accessible through guided tours. In addition to the rivers with crystal clear water, there are the following places worth seeing:

  • Abismo Anhumas: A 72 meter deep cave with an 80 meter deep, crystal clear lake the size of a football field. With a height of 18 meters, some of the largest underwater stalagmites in the world can be found in it.
  • Rio da Prata (Silver River): A river with crystal clear water and lots of fish, such as the Piraputanga . The headwaters of the river are surrounded by forests with thick lianas and mighty roots. There is a spring pot in which groundwater comes to the surface. The karst subsoil filters the water, making it absolutely crystal clear.
  • Circuito Arvorismo (climbing garden): a treetop tour through a mahogany forest at a height of 10 to 20 meters.
  • Gruta do Lago Azul (Cave of the Blue Lake): A cave located 20 kilometers from Bonito, discovered by Terena natives in 1924 , which is one of the largest flooded caves in the world with a depth of 100 meters and a 90 meter deep blue lake. It is made of limestone, many stalactites and stalagmites have formed. The cave was declared a historical landmark of the city in 1978.
