background information

Elizabeth Banks , director of the film, made the following statement about the play: “It was important to me to start Charlie's Angels with a female hymn that is driven by a strong voice but get three of the biggest voices out there? It was a dream come true. What Ariana, Miley and Lana have achieved exceeds even my high expectations. Your song is resonant and meaningful and is full of power. "

content

The lyrics to Don't Call Me Angel are in English. Literally translated into German, the title means something like “Don't call me an angel”. The music and the lyrics were written and composed jointly by Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, Savan Kotecha, Max Martin, Alma-Sofia Miettinen and Ilya Salmanzadeh. Musically, the song moves in the realm of dance pop and traps .

The song is based on two verses, a chorus, a bridge and an outro . It starts with the refrain sung by Grande and accompanied by Cyrus . This is followed by the first verse of the song, which is sung by Cyrus, as is the pre-chorus that follows. The chorus follows, which is sung by Cyrus and Grande like at the beginning. The second stanza and the subsequent pre-chorus are sung by Grande. On the following third chorus, which is sung again by Cyrus and Grange, Del Rey joins the song with the accompaniment. The third chorus is followed by a bridge sung by Del Rey. After the bridge, the chorus follows for the fourth and last time, which is performed like the previous one before the song ends with the outro. The outro is made up of parts of the chorus and is sung by Grande. The last line "Don't Call Me Angel" is sung by everyone.

"Boy, don't call me angel.
You ain't got me right.
Don't call me angel.
You can't pay my price.
Ain't from no Heaven.
Yeah, you heard me right. (Yeah, you heard me)
Even though you know we fly. (Though you know we)
Don't call me angel. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“Boy, don't call me an angel.
You did not understand me correctly.
Don't call me angel
You can't pay my price
I don't come from heaven.
Yes, you got me right. (Yes, you heard me)
Even if you know we're flying. (Although you know us)
Don't call me an angel. "

- Refrain, translation

Reviews

The editors of the German-language online magazine laut.de rated the collaboration as "mixed". Each singer brings her very own style , but they don't really want to mix. Grande gives the "sugar sweet diva " with angel wings, Cyrus shows her "fucked up badass side" and Del Rey is mysterious and seductive. Accordingly, the respective parts sound more like “snippets” of individual songs of their own instead of a “grandiose collective pop opus”.

Johanna Michaels from the FAZ ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ) had hoped for more from the “concentrated female power” of the music video. The colorful “mélange” of witch symbolism, the fall of man and the Victoria's Secret show is overloaded and besides a few “ empowerment phrases” doesn't have much to offer feminist . Even the man who is beaten up by Cyrus sits tied up and therefore harmless on a chair and at the end gets a lap dance . Michaels can only hope that the film has more to offer here.
