S-Bahn in Germany

previous logo S-Bahn Dresden

The Dresden S-Bahn is an essential part of the range of public transport services in Dresden and the Dresden metropolitan area . It is operated on behalf of the Upper Elbe Transport Association by DB Regio Verkehrsbetrieb Südostsachsen with currently three lines on a route network of 127.7 kilometers in length.

The S-Bahn tariff was introduced on a number of suburban railway lines on September 29, 1974. The name "S-Bahn" for the system was only officially used since May 31, 1992. The VVO tariff has been in force on the Dresden S-Bahn since May 24, 1998 . Outside of Dresden, it runs to the medium- sized towns of Freital , Meißen , Pirna , Radebeul , Coswig and, since December 9, 2007, to Freiberg . All lines stop at Dresden Central Station .

According to the Deutsche Bahn, the Dresden S-Bahn is the S-Bahn with the highest customer satisfaction in Germany.

Vehicle use

Used locomotive-covered double-deck - pull trains . All trains have 1st and 2nd carriage classes. In addition, as is usual with Deutsche Bahn AG S-Bahn operations , they are marked as " S-Bahn-Logo.svgBahn Dresden Deutsche Bahn AG-Logo.svg".

From July 16, 2007, 53 new double-deck cars (13 control and 40 intermediate cars ) were gradually delivered by the Görlitz Bombardier plant , which replaced the old double-deck cars on lines S 1 and S 3 at the timetable change on December 9, 2007. The investment volume of the 53 cars with speeds of up to 160 km / h amounts to 72 million euros. On the same day, a new local transport depot went into operation in Dresden's old town. The new vehicles were fully delivered by the timetable change in December 2007.

The locomotives come from the class 143 and class 146.0 . In contrast, the 182 series ended when the timetable changed in December 2015.

When the timetable changes in December 2018, the Dresden S-Bahn has the following fleet of vehicles: 20 double-decker cars built in 2003, 53 double-decker cars built in 2007.

A double-decker car from 2007 with bluish LED lighting. The cars are the first of their kind in the world to use LEDs for all lighting.

Line S 1 is the oldest and most important S-Bahn line in and around Dresden. It connects all the important places along the Upper Elbe region with the state capital Dresden. Both in rush hour traffic as well as for local recreation and tourism , their importance remains unbroken. Some remote places and hiking areas in Saxon Switzerland are easier to reach by S-Bahn than by bus or car .

From Schöna it leads, orographic left, along the Elbe on the Děčín – Dresden railway line , through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains , through Bad Schandau and past the Königstein Fortress to Pirna. There it changes to the Pirna – Coswig railway line, which runs parallel , leaves the immediate vicinity of the Elbe and runs through Heidenau and southeastern Dresden almost straight to Dresden Central Station. It follows the inner-city arc, crosses the Elbe on the Marienbrücke , reaches the Dresden-Neustadt train station and after this turns north-west, crosses Radebeul and Coswig and leaves the route in the direction of Meißen .

The sets of the S 1 basically consist of four double-decker cars and an electric locomotive. For larger events and between Easter and Pentecost, the trains run with five double-decker cars.

Between Dresden and Pirna, the upgrading of the existing tracks for S-Bahn operations up to 120 km / h (first expansion stage of the Dresden S-Bahn) and the construction of two new long-distance tracks (for 160 km / h) were completed on December 12, 2004 .

On July 16, 2007, the first 16 newly acquired double-deck cars were handed over for use on the S 1. Compared to the earlier sets, the cars have air conditioning, an electronic passenger information system , interior lighting using light-emitting diodes and sockets in 1st class seats. The 27.3-meter-long control cars have 82 seats, the 26.8-meter-long intermediate cars each have 126 seats. By December 9, 2007, the entire S 1 was converted to new vehicles.

From the 2010/2011 timetable change on December 12, 2010, the push-pull trains on the S 1 line were powered by class 145 locomotives . This should reduce the travel time by four minutes on the entire route. Since the locomotives do not have sufficient door controls for the new double-decker cars , the train attendants again had to clear the train at every platform. From the end of 2011, locomotives of the class 182 replaced those of the class 145. The locomotives of the class 182 were taken over by DB Regio from DB Schenker and equipped with a local transport package (including train destination display and side-selective door control). With the 2015/2016 timetable change on December 13, 2015, there was a changeover to class 146.0 locomotives .

Since April 2017, the S 1 has been running Monday to Friday between 5 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. between Meißen Triebischtal and Dresden Hauptbahnhof with four pairs of trains per hour, and since April 2018 to Pirna. However, the additional trains are clocked in such a way that in the section concerned there is no pure quarter-hour clock, but an irregular clock. Between Pirna and Dresden Neustadt there is an overlay of the S 2 almost every 10 minutes. The corresponding supplementary transport contract was signed on December 19, 2016.

Within the first 100 days after the increase in frequency to Meißen, the number of passengers grew by 200,000, which corresponds to an increase of 8%. The new stop at Bischofsplatz is now used by around 2,000 people entering and leaving the station every day. On the route to Pirna, the number of passengers rose by 6 percent after the increased frequency.

32 Dresden Airport

The airport S-Bahn connects Pirna, Heidenau and the south of Dresden with Dresden Airport and the microelectronics companies located in the north of the city. The S 2 and S 1 share the section between Dresden-Neustadt and Pirna (weekdays) or Dresden Hauptbahnhof (weekends, public holidays), so that this section runs every 10/20 minutes. The sets of the S 2 are made up of two double-decker cars and a class 143 electric locomotive , which, unlike the locomotives used on the other lines, must have an emergency brake override for driving through the tunnel section at Dresden Airport station .

S 2 train at Dobritz stop (2006)
S 2 train in the direction of the airport at the Zschachwitz stop (2010)

To connect the airport, the railway line between Dresden-Klotzsche and the airport was modernized and extended. Even before the opening of the S 2 on May 22, 1998, a regional train ran to Dresden Grenzstrasse and served to connect the aircraft yard and the ZMD . The route to the airport at Dresden-Klotzsche railway station ties off the Görlitz – Dresden railway line on both sides . Trains traveling in the direction of the airport cross the non-electrified route in the direction of Görlitz on a flyover structure. The Dresden-Klotzsche – Dresden Airport railway continues on a single track in a westerly direction and ends in the double-track tunnel station under the terminal of Dresden Airport.

The construction and expansion of the S-Bahn connection began in mid-1998. At the same time as the new airport terminal went into operation, operations to the airport began on March 25, 2001, with 36 class 642 diesel multiple units operating every half hour . In the first five months of operation, the average occupancy was 32 percent, with a total of 1,400 travelers per day. By the end of 2001 around 810,000 passengers were counted on the line.

At the beginning of March 2002 the electrification of the section between Dresden-Neustadt, Dresden-Klotzsche and the airport began. In 2002, 683,000 travelers were counted on the line.

By the end of 2004, the operation of the S2 line had been converted to a total of eight newly purchased double-decker cars and electric locomotives. The cars have air conditioning, a barrier-free toilet and sockets in first class. When the timetable changed in December 2004, the line to Pirna was extended. Some of the 1st class seats have been re-assigned to 2nd class seats. Since December 9, 2007, the S 2 trains have generally consisted of three double-decker cars due to the increased demand. From 2009, depending on demand, two or three cars were used; since 2011 only trains with two double-deck cars have been used on this line.

In 2005 around two million travelers were counted on the line, in 2010 it was 2.8 million.

Until the timetable change on May 30, 1999, some of the regional rail services on the Dresden Hbf – Radeberg – Arnsdorf (b Dresden) route were marketed as S 2. This S 2 ran from Arnsdorf (near Dresden) as a regional train to Kamenz , Görlitz or Zittau . At that time it was the only S-Bahn line that operated diesel-powered, locomotive-hauled push-pull trains.

The S 3 runs from the main train station on the Dresden – Werdau line towards Chemnitz. It crosses the Plauen reason to Freital. From Freital it runs in the valley of the Wild Weißeritz to Tharandt . The route was hardest hit by the August floods in 2002 and almost completely destroyed. After the line was put back into operation at the end of 2003 after the flood damage had been repaired, around 2300 passengers were counted per day.

Train on line S 3 in Tharandt (2006). More modern vehicles are now also being used on this line.

Within Dresden, the S 3 only serves the Dresden-Plauen stop in addition to the main train station. In Freital, the S-Bahn line opens up large parts of the populated areas. The city of Freital was only founded in 1921 from the three places Potschappel, Deuben and Döhlen, in 1964 Hainsberg was incorporated. The bus station with connections to ten regional and six city bus routes is also located near the Freital-Deuben train station . The railway line runs along the city's traffic axis, which is also the main axis of the city bus routes in Freitals .

Typically sets of two double-decker cars and a class 143 electric locomotive are used .

Until the timetable change in May 1995, the S 3 operated as the S 5. Between December 9, 2007 and December 11, 2010, a supplementary line to the S 3 and the regional train line RB 30, which runs parallel here, was designated as the S 30, since the timetable change on December 12, 2010 the entire S-Bahn line between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Freiberg will be marketed as the S 3. It also serves all stops on the way between Tharandt and Freiberg. The S 3 only runs Monday to Friday in the rush hour early and in the afternoon to Freiberg. It is the only Dresden S-Bahn line that leaves the network area of the Upper Elbe Transport Association. Between Niederbobritzsch and Freiberg, the tariff of the central Saxony transport association applies .

At the beginning of 2012, a circuit was pulled with a class 145 locomotive, from the end of 2012 October one circuit ran with Talent-2 multiple units for staff training. Since January 1, 2013, all circuits have been running again on schedule with the 143 series.

More local rail transport lines in the catchment area of the S-Bahn

In addition to the Coswig – Meißen Triebischtal (line S1, approx. 10 km) and Dresden-Klotzsche – Dresden Airport (line S2, approx. 3 km) sections, all routes used by the Dresden S-Bahn are also served by other local rail transport services. This means that there are similarly dense train sequences on numerous branches around Dresden as in the S-Bahn core network. B. Dresden-Klotzsche-Dresden-Neustadt six train pairs per hour (due to overlapping S 2, RE 1, RE 2, RB 33, RB 34, RB 60, RB 61), as well as Dresden – Tharandt in high season five train pairs (due to overlapping S 3, RB 30, RE 3). In addition, other lines serve other sections of the route in the Dresden metropolitan area that are not served by the S-Bahn and provide the S-Bahn there with qualitatively and quantitatively comparable offers, e.g. B. RB 31 Dresden Hbf – Cossebaude – Coswig every 30 minutes during working days with air-conditioned electric multiple units or double-decker push-pull trains, without these offers being marketed as S-Bahns themselves.

Regional Express

Various regional express lines run from Dresden Hauptbahnhof , connecting the Dresden metropolitan area in the direction of Chemnitz , Zwickau, Hof , Cottbus , Hoyerswerda , Leipzig, Görlitz and Wrocław as well as Zittau and Liberec . There are links to the S-Bahn trains in the Tharandt, Freiberg, Coswig, Dresden Mitte, Dresden-Neustadt and Dresden-Klotzsche stations.

If winter sports conditions are good , two additional RE trains run to the Eastern Ore Mountains to Altenberg , and on summer weekends a regional express train pair runs between Dresden Hauptbahnhof, Pirna, Bad Schandau, Děčín , Ústí nad Labem and Litoměřice . These lines are linked to the S-Bahn network at numerous stations between Dresden Hbf and Pirna as well as in Bad Schandau.

Regional train

In addition to the S 1, S 2 and S 3 S-Bahn lines, there are numerous regional train lines in and around Dresden, which also serve every stop and i. d. Usually also travel with air-conditioned vehicles, so that overall there is a dense transport offer. In particular, the hourly regional train line RB 30 Dresden – Tharandt – Freiberg – Chemnitz – Zwickau contributes to the character of the S-Bahn, as it runs exactly every 30 minutes from the S3 Dresden – Tharandt line, which also runs every hour. Overlaying the two lines creates a smooth 30-minute cycle between Dresden and Tharandt (or between Dresden and Freiberg during peak hours), which in the weekday peak hours with further S3 trains at around 15-minute intervals between Dresden and Tharandt is compressed.

The offer of the S 2 is strengthened in the section Dresden Hbf – Dresden-Neustadt – Dresden-Klotzsche with the RB lines 33, 34, 60 and 61 (to Königsbrück, Kamenz, Görlitz and Zittau), the S 1 is in the section Dresden Hbf –Dresden-Neustadt – Coswig supplemented by the RB 31 Dresden – Coswig – Großenhain – Elsterwerda, which runs on the left Elbe.

With a change in Heidenau or Pirna to the S-Bahn network connecting regional train lines are u. a. the RB 72 Heidenau – Kurort Altenberg and the RB 71 Pirna – Neustadt – Sebnitz.

When the railway line between Dolní Poustevna and Sebnitz , which had been interrupted since 1945, was restarted on July 5, 2014, the U 28 National Park Railway, operated jointly by DB Regio Südost and České dráhy with Desiro railcars of Deutsche Bahn, runs from Rumburk (Czech Republic) via Sebnitz and Bad Schandau to Děčín . The U28 runs between Bad Schandau and Schöna at times with gaps in the S1, whereby the overlapping of the two lines creates a 30-minute cycle.

Narrow-gauge railways

Two narrow-gauge railways connect to the S-Bahn network . In Radebeul Ost (connection to line S 1) it is possible to change to the Lößnitzgrundbahn . The Weißeritztalbahn runs from Freital-Hainsberg (connection to line S 3), which was out of service after the floods in 2002 and reopened on December 13, 2008 on the Freital-Hainsberg – Dippoldiswalde section. The section Freital-Hainsberg – Freital-Coßmannsdorf was u. a. Integrated into the Dresden S-Bahn tariff in the 1980s.

Infrastructure expansion and network expansion

Construction work carried out

The Dresden Airport train station

Since 2004, the S-Bahn between Dresden-Neustadt and Pirna has had its own two tracks, since 2013 also between Radebeul Ost and Coswig and since 2016 between Radebeul Ost and Dresden-Neustadt. The already existing facilities were dismantled after the war as a reparation payment. In the course of the possible increase in frequency, which is only possible between Pirna and Dresden-Neustadt, the S 2 was extended from the main station to Pirna. Before the route to the airport was electrified, only class 642 railcars were used on the S 2 , which were covered with advertising foils for Dresden Airport. Since the timetable change in December 2004, (newly acquired) double-decker trains have also been used on this line. The railcars formerly used there have been running on other regional railway lines since then, the foils were gradually removed between 2007 and 2010.

This means that the Dresden S-Bahn has modern systems and stations everywhere. Some of the construction measures were planned for the long term, and some were “forced” in the short term by the floods of 2002 . The expansion of the Dresden – Pirna route alone cost 222 million euros, according to the Upper Elbe Transport Association. The costs for the long-distance railway line destroyed by the flood are difficult or impossible to calculate down to the S-Bahn.

After around one year of construction work, the new, central station “Meißen Altstadt” and the newly built second track between Meißen and Meißen Altstadt on the Borsdorf – Coswig line went into operation on November 30, 2013 . According to the original tender, implementation planning, construction preparation and construction work between Meißen and Meißen-Triebischtal should run between August 2012 and August 2014.

Between the Dresden-Neustadt train station and the Dresden-Pieschen stop, the new “Dresden- Bischofsplatz ” stop went into operation on March 20, 2016 .

The forecourt of the Strehlen train station has been rebuilt since July 2019. Since then there has also been a direct changeover between trams and buses, as well as a small market operated by KONSUM Dresden eG .

The S-Bahn in the Dresden transport concept

S-Bahn fare ticket, 1994

In the first half of the 1990s, the comprehensive traffic concept for Dresden and the surrounding area was drawn up in 1994 and approved by the city council. The surrounding area considered for the S-Bahn included Riesa in the north-west, Bischofswerda in the north-east and Freiberg in the south-west in addition to the areas around Pirna, which are recorded in the existing network.

S-Bahn lines were planned from the main train station to Riesa and Großenhain on the route via Cossebaude . Only one line had been planned on the four-track line via Radebeul to Coswig. Line S 2 should alternate between Königsbrück and the airport (the last variant has been implemented). S-Bahn lines from Bischofswerda and Kamenz should run on the main route from Dresden-Neustadt to Heidenau and end in Dohna on the Müglitztalbahn . Heidenau, Pirna and Bad Schandau, on the other hand, were not considered as possible end-of-the-line stations. The traffic concept provided for four lines on the main route with its own S-Bahn tracks, which would have compressed the cycle to 7.5 minutes. However, these plans were rejected again at the end of the 1990s. The S-Bahn line to Tharandt was to be extended to Freiberg, which has been partially implemented since the timetable change on December 9, 2007 with the S 30 (now S 3).

Further considerations

City of Dresden

In addition to the newly built S-Bahn stations Dresden Freiberger Straße, Dresden Airport, Meißen Altstadt and Dresden Bischofsplatz, according to the draft of the traffic development concept for 2025 by the City of Dresden, another S-Bahn stop in Dresden at the corner of Königsbrücker Straße and Stauffenbergallee (S 2) aimed at. From autumn 2020 to the end of 2022, the area around the Plauen stop is to be renewed.

Expansion of the line network

The traffic development plan of the city of Dresden includes the requirement to set up another S-Bahn line on the left bank of the river between the main station and Coswig. It is intended to increase the existing regional train traffic. The aim is to run every 30 minutes via Friedrichstadt and Cotta. A new central stop is to be built in Cotta with transfer options to buses and trams. Concrete plans for these goals are not known as of 2018.

At the end of May 2018, the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) publicly announced plans to introduce new S-Bahn lines in the future. An S 5 Dresden – Elsterwerda, an S 6 Dresden – Königsbrück, an S 7 Dresden – Kamenz and an S 8 Dresden – Bautzen are planned.

Passenger numbers

The Dresden S-Bahn lines carry 42,000 passengers a day from Monday to Friday (as of 2018). This is around 70% of the rail passengers in the VVO area. In November 2013, Deutsche Bahn reported the number of daily passengers as around 36,000.

The individual lines recorded the following average daily passenger numbers in 2015:

S1 Dresden - Schöna

  • weekdays: 14,420 passengers (2009: 12,060 passengers)
  • Weekend / public holiday: 13,760 passengers (2009: 12,085 passengers)

S2 Dresden - Pirna

  • weekdays: 3,690 passengers (2009: 4,190 passengers)

S3 / RB30 Dresden - Tharandt

  • weekdays: 5,450 passengers (2009: 4,480 passengers)
  • Weekend / public holiday: 3,360 passengers (2009: 2,775 passengers)

The S 1 is used by 9,000 travelers per day in the Meißen district, around 7,000 drive over the city limits to and from Dresden (as of 2016).

In 2017, 15 million passengers were counted, more than ten percent more than in the previous year. One million more passengers were counted between Dresden and Meißen.

Customer guarantees

On December 12, 2010, customer guarantees from the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) came into force in the Dresden S-Bahn network . In detail these are:

  • Punctuality guarantee : If the train reaches the boarding station 15 minutes too late or if the customer misses his train because it left too early, the onward journey in the VVO area is organized. The guarantee also applies if the train arrives at its destination more than 15 minutes later than planned.
  • Connection guarantee : In the VVO there are train stations with connection security at Coswig, Dresden-Neustadt and Dresden Hauptbahnhof. The customer receives compensation if he cannot connect to another means of transport in the network area in the so-called peripheral locations or if the journey is delayed by more than 15 minutes. Furthermore, DB Regio guarantees the alternative onward journey by shared taxi or taxi.
  • Cleanliness guarantee : clean vehicles are a matter of course, they are cleaned regularly before and during operation. However, if a passenger's garment gets dirty through the fault of the railway company, the railway company pays the cleaning costs.
  • Information guarantee: If there are disruptions in operations, the customer must be informed about this within five minutes. This guarantee also covers the case that the passenger will get the difference back if they overpayed due to incorrect or incomplete information provided by the company. The central customer service helps free of charge by phone call, fax or e-mail.

For all customer guarantees, affected passengers will receive a guarantee ticket in the form of a 4-pass card with a current value of € 8.20 as compensation in addition to the services listed.

Tender for transport services 2010

On March 11, 2008, the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (ZVOE) published the tender for the transport performance of all lines of the Dresden S-Bahn. These were summarized in lot 1. Lot 2 comprised the regional train lines RB 33 (Dresden – Königsbrück) and RB 34 (Dresden – Kamenz). Lot 3 comprised the regional train lines RB 71 (Pirna – Neustadt – Bad Schandau) and RB 72 (Heidenau – Altenberg) as well as the winter sports express RE 19 Dresden – Heidenau – Altenberg.

Up until July 28, 2008, the interested companies admitted to the procedure had the opportunity to submit their offers to the ZVOE. Numerous companies have expressed their interest in the transport services. A negotiation process then took place in order to determine the most economical offer. Operations on the advertised routes began in December 2010. The new contracts have a term of ten years, with an optional four additional years.

S 1 train with the class 182 locomotive used in the timetable years 2012 to 2015 in Heidenau

Following the decision in March 2010, the transport services were awarded to the previous provider DB Regio , so that the S-Bahn will be operated until December 2027. Template: future / in 5 yearsDB Regio announced that from December 2010 the locomotives used on the S 1 will be exchanged for more powerful locomotives of the 182 series , which were taken over by DB Schenker . Video surveillance is also to be retrofitted in the car.

The Potsdam Railway Company was to be awarded the contract for lots 2 and 3 . However, the procurement procedure was objected to by the procurement chamber of the Free State of Saxony and the tender for the two lots was canceled. The Potsdam Railway Company also won a second tender. The operation was transferred to the then subsidiary of the Potsdam railway company, the Saxony urban railway . The transport contract with the later independent urban railway Saxony was only supposed to apply until December 2014 to enable a new tender with the ZVON's East Saxony network . Since this joint tender did not come about, the transport contract was extended until December 2024.
