The Football League Third Division 1988/89 was the 62nd season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champions were the Wolverhampton Wanderers and also rose to second-placed Sheffield United and, after play-off successes against Preston North End and the Bristol Rovers, also to third-placed Port Vale in the Football League Second Division . For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 1989/90, the second division teams Shrewsbury Town , Birmingham City and FC Walsall, ranked in the table below, took the places. From the Third Division in the Football League Fourth Division dismount had to Southend United , of Chesterfield FC , the FC Gillingham and FC Aldershot . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions Rotherham United and the Tranmere Rovers , Crewe Alexandra and the play-off winner Leyton Orient took the vacant positions in the following season 1989/90 .
