Squad
The 23-player preliminary World Cup squad was announced on May 15th. The final roster had to be reported to FIFA by June 4th. None of the nominated players have yet participated in a World Cup finals. All other players made their debut after the last World Cup participation.
With Ludwig Augustinsson , John Guidetti , Filip Helander , Isaac Kiese Thelin and Victor Lindelöf , Andersson appointed five players to his World Cup squad who won the title with the Swedish U-21 national team at the U-21 European Championship in 2015 . All of them were on the field in the final against Portugal , which was decided by a penalty shoot-out , with the exception of Helander they were also among the five participating and four successful penalty takers ( José Sá parried against Abdul Khalili ). All players from the squad were playing at a foreign club at the time of the World Cup, with captain Andreas Granqvist moving to Helsingborgs IF in Sweden after the tournament .

Group draw
Venues and quarters (blue) of the Swedes |
For the draw of the qualification groups on December 1st, the Swedes were assigned to pot 3 and could therefore be drawn into a group with defending champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, vice world champions Argentina or host Russia. Sweden meet in Group F on world champions Germany , Mexico and South Korea .
Sweden and Germany met in the quarter-finals of their first joint World Cup participation in 1934 and Sweden lost 2-1. 24 years later Sweden was able to return the favor and stop the defending champion's path with 3-1 in the semi-finals and reach the final for the only time so far. In 1974 both faced each other in the second round and Germany won 4-2. 32 years later, Germany won the World Cup round of 16 2-0. Overall, the balance sheet with 12 wins - of which only one competitive game - nine draws and 15 defeats is negative. Most recently they both met in two memorable qualifying games for the previous World Cup, which ended 4: 4 after 0: 4 deficit and 3: 5 after 2: 0 lead, which prompted the German national coach to comment after the group draw: “This time we want to lead 5-0 so that we are safe. ”The Swedes have played nine times against Mexico with four wins, including three draws and two defeats at the first meeting in the preliminary round of the 1958 World Cup. The last time they met was in January 2009 in the USA, where the Mexicans play many of their friendlies and Sweden won 1-0. The Swedes have played against South Korea four times so far. The first time at the Olympic Games in 1948, with a score of 12-0, one of the two highest wins in Swedish international history was achieved. The results in the three other matches were then much closer to 2: 0, 1: 1 and 2: 2.
The Swedes have not yet played in any of the preliminary round venues.
