The municipality of Peja ( Albanian  Komuna e Pejës , Serbian Општина Пећ Opština Peć ) is a municipality in Kosovo . It is located in the Peja district . The administrative seat is the city of Peja .

location

The municipality of Peja is located in the northwest of Kosovo. In the south the municipality borders on Deçan and Gjakova , in the east on Klina and Istog and in the north and west on the neighboring country Montenegro . In total there are 39 villages and the town of Peja in the municipality. The area is 603 km². Together with the municipalities of Istog and Klina, the municipality forms the Peja district.

The 2011 census showed a population of 96,450 for the municipality of Peja, of whom 87,975 said to be Albanians, 3,786 Bosniaks , 2,700 Balkan Egyptians , 993 Roma , 332 Serbs , 189 Gorans , 143 Ashkali and 59 Turks . 92,914 declared themselves Muslims, 2,507  Catholics , 365 as  Orthodox , 409 gave no answer and 48 have no faith.

Administration and politics

The legislative authority is the municipal council (Albanian Kuvendi komunal , Serbian Skupština opštine ). This consists of 35 members who are directly elected by the people every four years. Both the council president and his deputy are elected in the constituent session of the municipal councils in a secret ballot. The tasks of the municipal council include the definition and amendment of the municipal regulations, budget and investment planning, acceptance of invoices, annual planning and the preparation of annual reports, the convening of statutory committees , the definition of taxes and fees , the definition and use of symbols Municipality, the definition and awarding of awards and honorary titles, the naming of alleys, streets and squares as well as agreements for cooperation with other municipalities at national and international level.

Since the 2017 elections, the municipal council has consisted of mandates from the following parties, with just over a third of women:

The mayor, like the local council, is elected directly by the people every four years and appoints a local government consisting of 14 directorates (Albanian Drejtoritë , Serbian Uprave ). The mayor's office is the mayor's office apparatus and supports him in his constitutional functions. In this sense, its employees, under the leadership of the mayor, coordinate general government policy and provide information to the municipal government.

Judiciary

The District Court of Peja is responsible for legal disputes at first instance. It consists of departments for private and criminal law , serious crimes , juvenile criminal law and petty offenses . Branch offices of the district court are located in Deçan , Istog and Klina . Of the 24 judges, eight are female and all belong to the Albanian ethnic group. The prosecution consists of three departments (General, Serious Crimes, Youth) and employs 24 public prosecutors, all but one of whom are Albanians. The proportion of women here is 38%.

The coat of arms of the municipality of Peja shows historical and traditional characteristics of the area on a red background. The building with the two towers symbolizes a defensive residential tower (alb. Kulla ), the architecture of which is characteristic of the entire Dukagjini region. In the municipality of Peja there are 22 kullas belonging to the country's cultural heritage, nine of which are in the city itself. The bridge symbolizes the stone arch bridge in the city of Peja (alb. Ura e Gurit ), which spans the river Bistrica e Pejës and is also a listed building.

Attractions

Church of St. Jeremiah

In the village of Gorazhdec / Goraždevac, located in the larger municipality, there is the log cabin church of St. Jeremiah, which dates back to the first half of the 18th century. It is the only church of its kind in Kosovo. The small building is located on the site of the Goraždevac cemetery. It has not been used as a church since 1936, but was carefully restored in 1968.
