Hans von Waltheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans von Waltheim , also Hans von Waltheym , (* 1422 in Halle ; † April 21, 1479 in Leipzig ) was a German patrician from Halle, traveler and pilgrim of the 15th century.

Life

Waltheym came from an Upper Franconian family. His father was the Pfänner Fabian von Waltheym. It is believed that he and his father visited the city of Basel during the council in 1434 . As early as 1440 he was a citizen of Halle himself and from 1450 he held public offices in the city. At that time, the Pfänner was still the dominant element in the patriciate of the city of Halle. In 1459, 1462, 1465 and 1468 he was mayor of Halle.

After his pilgrimage in 1474/1475 Waltheym was one of the leaders of the Pfänner in their struggle to maintain sole rule in the city. The Archbishop of Magdeburg had allied himself with the guilds of the city against the Pfänner. Waltheym had to flee to Leipzig and lost - like all Pfänner - a quarter of his salt estates and a fifth of his remaining fortune in 1479.
