Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize
The Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize is an ING-DiBa prize awarded annually in autumn for special achievements in the field of critical consumer journalism .
It is named after former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt , who was also the patron of the award during his lifetime. Since 1996, the Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize has honored consumer-oriented reporting on economic and financial topics. In the first four years, one prize winner was honored. In 2000 and 2001, a distinction was made between the media genres TV, print, online and, in some cases, radio, and a prize winner was awarded for each genre. Since 2002, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes have been awarded across all genres. The Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize is currently endowed with a total of 35,000 euros, of which 15,000 goes to first place, 10,000 to second and 5,000 euros to third place. A young talent award endowed with 5000 euros has been awarded since 2017.

criticism
The Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize is aggressively sponsored by the private direct bank ING. High-ranking politicians are also regularly present at the awards ceremony. Various journalists have therefore criticized in the past that the Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize is too closely linked to politics and the private sector. The 2018 young talent, Laura Meschede , rejected the award, justifying this by stating that the award was a "PR machine".
