List of Kaiser Josef II monuments
Monuments in memory of the Emperor Joseph II were erected in numerous towns and communities in the countries of the Bohemian Crown and in the Austrian hereditary lands in the 19th century . The initiators of these monuments wanted to remember important results of his Josephine reforms (motto: "Everything for the people; nothing by the people"), in particular the "abolition of serfdom" through the subject patent of 1781 ("Joseph - the peasant liberator") and the tolerance patent of 1781 on religious freedom, as well as the reforms to reorganize the property tax and improve public health.
List of monuments
Most of the monuments were erected in the countries of the Bohemian Crown. They usually have the same appearance because they were cast according to a "standard model" in the former Graeflich Salm'sche art foundry in Blansko . The monument shows the emperor with his serfdom revocation patent in hand.
Today it is no longer possible to clearly determine who is the creator of the sculpture. The following artists are eligible:
- Paul Wewerka (1826–1899), sculptor in the model studio of the ironworks in Blansko based on a painting by Joseph Hickel (1736–1807)
- Anton Brenek , sculptor
- Viktor Tilgner (1844–1896), sculptor, known for his busts of the imperial family
- Theodor Friedl (1842–1900), sculptor
The erection of these monuments in the areas inhabited by Germans towards the end of the 19th century on the 100th anniversary of the reforms was probably also an expression of the general tightening of relations between German and Czech citizens.
Czech Republic
In Czechoslovakia , according to the "Law for the Protection of the Republic of March 19, 1923" (Zákon na ochranu republiky č. 50/1923, § 26), monuments, inscriptions, busts, panels, pictures and coats of arms, which commemorated members of the dynasties who ruled in Austria, Hungary, Austria-Hungary or in the German Reich were labeled as subversive and had to be removed. This law came into force on May 1, 1923. After the Kaiser Josef II monuments were removed, mostly Hans Kudlich monuments or war memorials were erected in their place . Some monuments have been re-erected since the 1990s.
