List of stumbling blocks in the province of Barcelona
The list of stumbling blocks in the province of Barcelona contains the stumbling blocks in the province of Barcelona in Spain , which were laid by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig . Stumbling blocks remind of the fate of the people who were murdered, deported, expelled or driven to suicide by the National Socialists . As a rule, they are located in front of the last self-chosen residence of the victim, but in Castellar del Vallès , Gironella , Igualada , Navàs and Olesa de Montserrat, they are collected in a central square in the city.
The first relocations in Spain took place on April 9, 2015, at noon in Navàs and in the late afternoon in El Palà de Torroella . The Catalan translation of the term stumbling blocks is: pedres que fan ensopegar . In Spanish they are called piedras de la memoria (memorial stones ).
Some of the tables can be sorted; the basic sorting is done alphabetically according to the family name.
Fate of the Spanish Republicans
During the German occupation of France , large groups of Spanish republicans who had fled to France after Franco's victory were arrested by the Nazi regime and either handed over to the Vichy regime or deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp . Around 7,000 Spaniards were imprisoned there and sentenced to forced labor, more than half of them were murdered by the Nazi regime. The Franco regime stripped the surviving Spanish concentration camp prisoners of their citizenship and made them stateless . For several decades they were denied any form of victim recognition or reparation.
