National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark (short DIF ; German  "Danish Sports Association" ) is an umbrella organization for some 60 sports federations, which in latitude and competitive sports in Denmark are active. In addition to the Danish championships ( Danish danske mesterskaber , DM), his area of responsibility also includes the country's participation in the Olympic Games , to which they take part at the international level under the name National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark (“ National Olympic Committee (NOK) and Sports Confederation of Denmark ”). The association is headquartered in the House of Sports ( Idrættens Hus ) , which is in close proximity to the national stadium Parken in Brøndby municipality .

The association has over 1.7 million members who are spread over 10,803 sports clubs (as of 2010). The most popular sports are soccer , followed by golf (2nd), swimming (3rd), gymnastics (4th), handball (5th) and badminton (6th).

Main income source of the DIF form gains from the Danish Lotto company Danske Spil A / S originate. In addition to the state (80%), the DIF (10%) also owns shares in the company that holds the lottery monopoly in Denmark . The remaining ten percent are owned by Denmark's second major sports association, Danske Gymnastik- og Idrætsforeninger (DGI for short, “Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations”). with 1.3 million members. A planned merger of the two associations in June 2008, which was to be carried out by 2012, failed a few months later due to resistance from DIF.

history

The association was founded on February 14, 1896, when 18 clubs from nine sports merged to form the Dansk Idræts-Forbund (German: "Danish Sports Association"). The football association Dansk Boldspil-Union (DBU) was the only sports association that was there from the start. The 2200 mostly male members came mainly from the Copenhagen bourgeoisie; only later was the organization dominated by workers and provincials. After disputes with the professional associations, the DIF developed from 1925 into an umbrella organization with in principle independent associations. Previously, the management of the umbrella organization tried to control the individual professional associations through common amateur and competition rules. Today they are only obliged to adhere to various guidelines of the DIF, such as those relating to doping or the Danish championships.

Since 1991, the association has chosen Denmark's Sportsman of the Year (Årets Sportsnavn) every year . The award, endowed with DKR 50,000, is one of the most important honors in Danish sport and is carried out in cooperation with the daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten . In addition, a Hall of Fame of Danish Sports (Sportens Hall of Fame) was established in 1992 , which, in cooperation with the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet , the state organization for elite sports, Team Danmark , and the operating company of the Parken Stadium, each year a major Danish athlete as Honorary member.

In 1993, the Danish NOK Danmarks Olympiske Komité (DOK), which was founded in 1905 and had worked independently until then, merged with DIF. With the merger, the new association was given the name Danmarks Idræts-Forbund (dt. "Denmark's Sports Association"), since 2013 the association name has been spelled together, i.e. without a hyphen (Danmarks Idrætsforbund) .
