Mapleton is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1948 people in 864 households.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Freedom has a total area of 88.94 km², of which 87.98 km² is land and 0.96 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Mapleton is in northeast Aroostook County. The Aroostook River flows east through the north of the town . The town area is largely drained by the eastward flowing North Branch Presque Isle Stream and the Teakettle Brook flowing into it from the north ; only the extreme northwest of Mapleton is drained by the Clayton Brook, which flows into the Aroostook River . To the east is Hanson Lake . The surface of the area is rather flat. The highest point is the 202 m high Hobart Hill in the southeast of Mapleton.

history
The soil in Mapleton is sandy, loamy soil, fairly fertile and easy to work with. Mainly potatoes are grown. There was a starch factory in town that processed 60,000 bushels of potatoes a year. There are two settlements within the town, Mapleton to the southwest and State Road to the northwest. Sawmills, gravel works and a potash factory were operated on the rivers.
On March 5, 1880 Mapleton was declared a town, named after the Maple growing in the forests of Mapleton . In 1870 there were 444 residents in the town, in 1880 there were 705.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Maine State Route 163 runs in a west-east direction . It connects Mapleton with Presque Isle in the east and Ashland in the west. Maine State Route 227 meanders through the north of the town .
Mapleton is on the Squa Pan – Stockholm railway line . A junction leads to the Mapleton – Presque Isle railway , which is used exclusively for freight traffic.

Mapleton does not have a library of its own; the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library in Presque Isle is the closest library.
