The Nordwestbahn (proper spelling: NordWestBahn) GmbH (NWB) is a private railway company that has been operating local rail passenger transport on main and branch lines in northwest and western Germany on behalf of various authorities since 2000 . The Nordwestbahn transport network currently comprises 20 lines with around 1,500 kilometers of routes. Nordwestbahn has 850 employees and transports around 40 million passengers a year. It is a subsidiary of Transdev GmbH , Berlin.

history

The company was founded in 1999 by the shareholders Veolia Verkehr Regio GmbH (64% share, today: Transdev Regio GmbH), Stadtwerke Osnabrück AG (26%) and Verkehr und Wasser GmbH (VWG) from Oldenburg (10%). Osnabrück was chosen as the seat of the company . In 2011 the municipal company VWG and then in 2014 also the Stadtwerke Osnabrück announced that they wanted to sell their shares by the end of 2017 for reasons of public procurement law. The increasing expansion of the Nordwestbahn under EU law is no longer compatible with the concentration on the regional core business of the two supply companies . With effect from January 3, 2017, their shares in Nordwestbahn were sold to Berlin-based Transdev Regio GmbH , which in turn belongs to Transdev GmbH.

Transport networks

Weser-Ems (WE): Since November 5, 2000, Nordwestbahn has been operating the Weser-Ems network in Lower Saxony on behalf of the Lower Saxony regional transport company (LNVG) . The contract was extended from 2014 to 2026. With the extension of the contract, Nordwestbahn introduced numerous changes for passengers on the four lines RE 18, RE 19, RB 58 and RB 59: Over 60 new ticket machines were installed, additional customer centers were opened, all multiple units received a complete refurbishment, and six new multiple units will be added and a ban on alcohol consumption on the train was introduced.

Diesel network Ostwestfalen (OWL): Since December 2013, the Nordwestbahn has been operating the Ostwestfalen diesel network on behalf of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe , the Nordhessischer Verkehrsverbund and the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen . This was tendered in two lots for a period of twelve years. The North West Railway won the South Lottery, the North Lot the Eurobahn .

The Ostwestfalen diesel network includes the Ems-Senne-Weser network operated by Nordwestbahn between 2003 and 2013 with the lines RB 67 , RB 74 , RB 75 , RE 82 and RB 85 . RB 67 and RE 82 are part of Lot Nord and are now operated by the Eurobahn .

The RB 84 line (Paderborn – Holzminden) was extended to Kreiensen at the start of the contract and replaces the DB Regio regional train between Holzminden and Kreiensen . On the RB 85 line (Ottbergen – Göttingen), the Nordwestbahn runs every weekday during the day. After the appropriate infrastructure had been built, the RB 85 was extended to Paderborn. Between Paderborn and Ottbergen , the RB 84 and RB 85 are combined .

Emscher-Münsterland network (EM): Since the timetable change in December 2006, Nordwestbahn has been providing transport services for the Emscher-Münsterland network on behalf of the special purpose associations Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the Zweckverband SPNV Münsterland (ZVM) . In 2016, the Nordwestbahn received the renewed contract to operate the network from 2018 to at least December 2021. The Nordwestbahn was also able to secure the follow-up contract from December 2021 to December 2028.

Niers-Rhein-Emscher-Netz (NRE): The awarding committee of the VRR has commissioned the Nordwestbahn with the implementation of the local rail passenger transport in the Niers-Rhein-Emscher-Netz based on a Europe-wide tender . 28 LINT 41 H railcars are used .

Regional S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony (RSBN): The Nordwestbahn won the tender for the regional S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony in March 2008 . DB Regio initially filed an objection to the awarding of these routes to Nordwestbahn . DB Regio took part in the tender without success. In the event of a new tendering process, it intended to use the DB Heidekrautbahn, which is not subject to tariff restrictions . During the proceedings before the Higher Regional Court in Celle, however, DB Regio withdrew its request for review. The award of the Bremen S-Bahn to Nordwestbahn became legally valid in July 2008. The Nordwestbahn uses Coradia Continental vehicles to operate the Bremen S-Bahn .

Weser- / Lammetalbahn (WLB): Since December 11, 2011, the Nordwestbahn has been operating the Weser / Lammetalbahn, which was previously operated by the Eurobahn.

S-Bahn Hanover : From December 11, 2021, the Nordwestbahn should take over the operating services of the S-Bahn Hanover . In 2019, a new subsidiary was founded with Transdev Hannover GmbH, which will operate the S-Bahn network in Hanover from June 12, 2022 under the brand "SBH S-Bahn Hannover".

On the routes of the Weser-Ems network and the Weser / Lammetalbahn , Nordwestbahn uses LINT 41 railcars , all of which are rented from the LNVG vehicle pool . With the timetable change in 2016, six new LINT 41 railcars will now be used on the routes of the Weser-Ems network . The rest of the vehicle pool had previously been completely refurbished. LINT 41 are also used in the Niers-Rhein-Emscher network .

Another 43 Talent- type railcars , mostly in three parts, are used in the Emscher-Münsterland network and the Ostwestfalen diesel network. The majority of the Talent railcars are owned by the leasing company Alpha Trains .

Nordwestbahn has procured 18 three and 17 five-part Alstom Coradia Continental railcars for the operation of the Bremen / Lower Saxony regional S-Bahn . These have convenience features such as 230 volt sockets and a family area for each railcar.

Since the Nordwestbahn was missing three LINT railcars since August 2010 (collision with a work train in Geldern station), Talent railcars were rented from DB Regio , among others . These were replaced at the beginning of 2011 by the Regio-Shuttle RS 1 borrowed from Agilis . The Regio-Shuttles were rented until the end of May 2011 and then returned to Agilis for their own use.

From 2001 onwards, the Nordwestbahn used Siemens Desiro Classic railcars on the Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven route for a few years , and in 2009 also on the Dortmund – Dorsten route at short notice.

Depots

Depot in Dorsten

The Nordwestbahn maintains a depot in the port of Osnabrück to maintain the railcars of the Weser-Ems network and the Ostwestfalen diesel network . A total of five maintenance tracks, a car wash and a petrol station are available there.

The Nordwestbahn built another depot in 2007 in Dorsten . This is used to maintain the railcars on the Emscher-Münsterland network . A second workshop track was put into operation in June 2015. For the maintenance of the railcars of the Niers-Rhein-Emscher network , the workshop of the sister company Rheinisch-Bergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in Mettmann was expanded in order to use the facilities there as the client.

The depot for the regional S-Bahn is located in the Bremerhaven district of Wulsdorf . The hall has two maintenance tracks with an overhead line. The car wash installed next to the workshop building also has an overhead line; the motor vehicle drives through it at 1 km / h.

Customer centers

Nordwestbahn operates its own customer centers in the station halls of Bremen Central Station . Since the timetable change in 2016, Nordwestbahn has taken over the customer centers in Wilhelmshaven and Cloppenburg from Deutsche Bahn. Through cooperation with regional partners, Nordwestbahn also offers customer contact points in Dorsten (service kiosk at the train station), in Oldenburg ( VWG customer center at Lappan and at the central bus station ZOB), in Bremerhaven ( BremerhavenBus customer center at the central station) and in the Station buildings for the Bad Salzdetfurth , Holzminden and Vechta stations (“Reise-Treff”). In the Weser-Ems region, numerous "TicketPartners" of the Nordwestbahn take over the passenger-operated ticket sales near the train station.

Tickets and tariffs

Ticket machines were abolished on the train. (March 2017)

The Nordwestbahn serves a variety of tariff zones with its lines:

The DB tariff is also used across countries . Nordwestbahn is a member of the tariff association of federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE), which organizes tariff recognition and revenue sharing between non-federally owned railways and Deutsche Bahn.

In accordance with the specifications of the respective transport contract, the Nordwestbahn sells tickets on many lines via its own machines on the train (Diesel Network Ostwestfalen) or via machines at the stations (Weser-Ems, Regio-S-Bahn Bremen / Lower Saxony, Weser- / Lammetalbahn) to the Stations of the Ostwestfalen diesel network in Lower Saxony and at some stations in the Münsterland (Niers-Rhein-Emscher, Emscher-Münsterland networks). The stations along the East Frisian Coast Railway were equipped with stationary ticket machines from the Nordwestbahn in July 2016. With the timetable change in December 2016, the Nordwestbahn changed the sales concept in the Weser-Ems region. Previously, travelers could buy their tickets via mobile ticket machines on the train, now the “boarding only with a valid ticket” applies. This principle applies uniformly to all local transport lines throughout Lower Saxony. In connection with this, the Nordwestbahn has equipped almost all stops in the transport network with new ticket machines and has also expanded personal sales with fourteen “ticket partners”.

The Quer-durch-Land-Ticket as well as the state tickets for Lower Saxony, Bremen and North Rhine-Westphalia are also valid on the trains of the Nordwestbahn.

Tourist offer

In addition to the regular service, the Nordwestbahn offers a touristic service that it sells under the “StreifZzüge” brand. The offer includes day and multi-day trips with trains of the Nordwestbahn or with coaches to various destinations in Germany and Europe. The focus is on trips to the East Frisian Islands , whereby the travel package here includes the trip with (mostly scheduled) trains of the Nordwestbahn, the bus from the train station (mostly Esens or Sande) to the ferry terminal, the ferry crossing and, if necessary, hotel accommodation. The trips are sold on the Nordwestbahn website, via the Nordwestbahn customer centers in Bremen and Osnabrück or via the Nordwestbahn “StreifZug” counter in the mobility center of Stadtwerke Osnabrück at Osnabrück Neumarkt.

Train cancellations

In 2018, the Nordwestbahn canceled so many trips on some North Rhine-Westphalian lines due to a lack of train drivers that the press reported repeatedly and the VRR imposed fines. In the absence of a sufficient effect of the penalty payment, the VRR invited to the crisis summit with the NWB managing directors.

Trains are also regularly canceled due to illness in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

Significant changes are expected on the RE18 Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven – Bremen – Osnabrück line by the end of March, otherwise there could be a warning to the Transdev parent company - it would already be the second. The company could then be excluded from future tenders. Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Olaf Lies criticized the fact that the Nordwestbahn apparently preferred to pay the fines on the shortest route and maintain the southern and longer connection to Osnabrück or Bremen. In the extreme northwest, a noticeable number of trains would fail completely.
