The Cook Islands took part in the Olympic Games for the third time at the 1996 Summer Olympics . The team consisted of three athletes, two men and one woman. They started in three competitions in three sports. The youngest participant was track and field athlete Mark Sherwin at 26 years and 186 days, and the oldest was weightlifter Samuel Nunuke Pera at 27 years and 116 days. The Cook Islands flag was carried into the Olympic Stadium by Samuel Nunuke Pera during the opening ceremony on July 19, 1996.
