Palestine took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , USA , with two athletes. Israel had protested against participation under the name Palestine , but its protest had failed.
It was the first participation for Palestine after it had already been accepted into the Olympic Council of Asia in 1985 against the protests of Israel and into the IOC in 1995. Majdi Abu Marahil, a 32-year-old long-distance runner from the Nusseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, was a flag bearer. The athlete Ihab Salama also took part next to him.
