Mauritania took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics for the fourth time in the Summer Olympics. The team consisted of four athletes who competed in four athletics competitions. The youngest participant was Noureddine Ould Ménira with 28 years and 82 days, the oldest was Sid'Ahmed Ould Mohamedou with 30 years and 212 days. During the opening ceremony on July 19, 1996, Noureddine Ould Ménira carried the flag of Mauritania into the Olympic Stadium.
