The US season was the clear favorite to win. The team was reigning world champion and had the 100-meter Olympic champion in Maurice Greene in its ranks. The Canadian team, Olympic champion in 1996 , was no longer as strong as in Atlanta . The most serious competitor was the British team, runner-up in 1999 and with strong individual runners. But the British failed in the run-up, they were disqualified. The other medal contenders remained above all the World Cup third Brazil and the World Cup fourth Cuba.

The Americans fully lived up to their claims. Right from the start of the race, the relay team was right at the front, at the last change Cuba was in second place ahead of Brazil, so the favorite teams were already in the lead here. Maurice Greene increased the lead of his team again, that was the Olympic victory for the Americans. The Brazilian final runner Cláudio Roberto Souza brought his relay to silver place with a gap of 29 hundredths of a second behind the winners, Freddy Mayola secured bronze for Cuba 14 hundredths of a second behind Brazil. Jamaica was fourth ahead of France and Japan.

In the twentieth Olympic final, the US relay won its fifteenth gold medal in the 4-by-100-meter relay .
