The Pierce County is a county in the US state of Washington . At the 2010 census , the county had 795,225 people and a population density of 182.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is the port city of Tacoma .
Pierce County is part of the Seattle metropolitan area .
geography
Pierce County is located in west-central Washington between Puget Sound and the Cascade Range , the highest peak of which, Mount Rainier volcano , is in the east of the county.
Pierce County has a total area of 4,679 square kilometers, spread over 4,349 square kilometers of land and 330 square kilometers of water.

history
The county was formed on December 22, 1852 from former parts of Thurston County. It was named after Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), the 14th President of the USA (1853-1857).

Mount Rainier National Park
The historic Paradise Inn , a hotel built in 1916, is located in Mount Rainier National Park . The building was listed on May 28, 1987 on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Monument with the number 87001336. It was also registered as a National Historic Landmark .
Also in Mount Rainier National Park is the historic Yakima Park Stockade Group (also known as North and South Blockhouses, Museum, and Stockade at Sunrise ), a building complex built in 1930. It was listed on May 28, 1987 by the National Register of Historic Places as a historic monument with the number 87001337. It was also registered as a National Historic Landmark .
Tacoma
The historic Fireboat Station (also known as Fire Station No. 18 ) in Tacoma is located at 302 East 11th Street. It was incorporated by the NRHP in 1986 (NRHP 86000978).
In Tacoma , the historic stands Nisqually Power Substation (also known as Tacoma Substation & Storage House ), a 1911-built substation . The two buildings were added on April 25, 2001 by the NRHP as historical monuments with the number 01000429.

The racial the population was composed of 74.2 percent white, 6.8 percent African American, 1.4 percent Native American, 6.0 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 6.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 9.2 percent of the population.
Statistically, 2.56 people lived in each of the 291,323 households.
24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.6 percent of the population was female.
