Course of the road

The Pyhrn Autobahn A 9 is an important north-south axis in Austria . It runs (as a continuation of the A8 ) over a length of 230.020 kilometers from the Voralpenkreuz junction at Sattledt via Graz to Spielfeld on the border with Slovenia , where it joins the Slovenian A1 motorway . In December 2004, the eight-kilometer-long last section of the A9 between Inzersdorf and Schön was completed.
history
The Pyhrn Autobahn connects the greater Graz and Linz areas, making it the second largest with the third largest city in Austria. It also took over the function of the former guest worker route in sections , thereby relieving the main roads. The important transport route that links Nuremberg with Zagreb on a national level is one of the most important Alpine transit routes. The total completion took 33 years and took place between 1971 and 2004 in numerous sections:

Expansion status
The motorway has four lanes and six lanes near Graz.
The sections from the Peggau / Deutschfeistritz junction to Graz-Nord and Graz-Webling to the Graz-West junction have been expanded to include six lanes due to the heavy traffic.
The second tube of the Lainberg tunnel, including the short tunnel, was completed in early 2009 and is therefore passable. The second tube of the Bosruck tunnel with the Ardning slope bridge was completed in July 2013. The renovation of the existing tube was completed in October 2015. The Bosruck Tunnel has had four lanes since October 19, 2015, and can therefore be used without oncoming traffic.
The expansion of the Klaus tunnel chain began at the end of 2013 with the construction of bridges. The second tunnel tubes were built from the end of 2014 and have been in operation since September 15, 2017. The existing pipes were then renovated. On December 19, 2018, the Klaus tunnel chain was fully approved.
From September 2013 to July 2017, the Gleinalm tunnel was also equipped with a second tube. The newly constructed tube went into operation on July 21, 2017, and the existing tube was renovated between autumn 2017 and December 2019. Since December 20, 2019, the Gleinalm tunnel has also had four lanes and is therefore passable without oncoming traffic.
After completion of these expansion measures on December 20, 2019, the entire Pyhrn Autobahn can be used without two-way traffic areas.
Interesting road structures along the way
- Underfloor route Kirchdorf an der Krems
- Klaus tunnel chain
- Bosruck tunnel
- Selzthal junction (RFB Linz) with the Ennstal exit on the left
- Non-public entry and exit near Selzthal (used in the Pyhrnbahn rail replacement service )
- Moor bridge near Trieben : In the area of the Trieben Moor, the motorway is designed as a bridge over a section of around 5.5 km, which rests on numerous pillars in the moorland.
- St. Michael junction (roundabout with connections to Semmering expressway S6 and Murtal expressway S36)
- Gleinalm tunnel
- Gratkorn tunnel north / south
- Plabutschtunnel , the second longest double-tube tunnel in Europe
- Lighting system with blue LED lights between the Graz-Webling junction and the Seiersberg junction
- Graz West junction (with connections to the south A2 motorway)
Traffic control system
Due to the Pollution Control Act air (IG-L) was one in 2009 traffic management system (VBA) with LED - variable message signs in the section Gratkorn - -Nord Lebring built. If the fine dust pollution is too high , the speed limit is automatically reduced to 100 km / h (so-called fine dust hundreds ). The driver is also warned of fog and dangers. There are also LED traffic information boards at the St. Michael junction, which warn of construction sites, tunnel closures and traffic jams.
After closing the gap on the S35, the S6 - S35 route offers an alternative to the Gleinalm tunnel, which is prone to accidents and subject to special tolls. With the completion of the construction work, the new Styrian alternate signposting was put into operation around the intersection areas Graz West, Bruck, St. Michael and Peggau-Deutschfeistritz . In the event of road closures, road users can be redirected over a large area via signposts and electronic display boards, thus saving themselves a traffic jam on their route.
Section control system
On October 10, 2011, a section control system was put into operation in both directions of travel in the area of the Plabutsch tunnel . This is intended to reduce the number of accidents, which mostly occur due to non-compliance with the speed limit, by up to 40 percent.
Special toll route
There are two special toll sections on the motorway that are not subject to the vignette requirement and where the toll must therefore be paid in cash or by video toll at the toll stations (single-trip tariffs for cars, as of 2020):
- Gleinalm tunnel € 9.50
- Bosruck tunnel € 5.50
Lock
The roof of the Gleinalm tunnel was badly damaged in a bus fire on August 4, 2016 . As a result, the motorway between the St. Michael junction and the Übelbach junction had to be closed until August 25, 2016. The diversion took place via Bruck an der Mur , via the Semmering expressway S6 and the Bruck expressway S 35; the transit traffic was largely diverted via the Tauern Autobahn A10 and the Süd Autobahn A 2.
A similar fire accident occurred on October 5, 2018, this time in the east tunnel that had just opened. A special transport with a 400-ton crane truck caught fire. This time, too, the tunnel was closed for a long time and diversions were made as described above. The tunnel was opened to traffic again on December 7, 2018.
