The municipality of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux is located in the Bugey , about 23 km south-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , halfway between Lyon and Geneva in a broader view . In the north, the municipality extends to the river Ain , which gave the department its name.
