The 37th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from February 2 to 16, 2003 in St. Moritz , Switzerland .

The official mascot "Smoony" was designed by Ian D. Marsden and the design company Mars10 Design.

Worth mentioning

  • Hermann Maier , who (after his motorcycle accident on August 24, 2001) did not take part in World Cup races again until January, was the first to take part in a major event. But he did not contest any other World Cup races after the World Championships this season.
  • Michael Walchhofer had achieved several top placings in previous downhills, but it was here that he managed to beat the world's elite for the first time at the world championships.
  • The time overlay on the TV was a bit confusing, because the clock continued to run a certain fraction after the finish and then clicked back to the actually measured time, which is a certain drama, especially with tighter decisions (especially Super-G women) barg.
  • The slaloms were won by a pair of siblings for the first time: on February 15th it was Janica Kostelić and the day after her brother Ivica.
  • For the first time since Morioka 1993 (gold from Karin Buder ), Austria's women were able to win a medal (actually two) in a major event in slalom .
  • The German Ski Association remained without a medal, although the women had certainly been given opportunities; After the World Championships, the "Bild-Zeitung" published a caricature in the form of a "postcard from St. Moritz" in which the DSV ladies thanked them "for the great vacation".
