history

Stockholm was originally founded in 1881 under the name Upsala. The previous name for this area was Township 16, Third Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T16 R3 WELS). In the early days of the city, logging and agriculture were the main industries. The Little Madawaska River was regulated with dams and numerous sawmills were operated with its water . The area was organized as Stockholm Plantation in 1895. Stockholm was connected to the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad as early as 1881 . Stockholm became a town on February 27, 1911 and had its most populous time in the 1920s . At that time, 1,300 people lived in Stockholm. There were several schools, shops and also a rental house and overnight accommodation in the city, as well as two churches, a third was built in 1928. In the wake of the Great Depression in the 1930s , many residents left Stockholm and many of the sawmills were closed. Today there are still three churches in Stockholm (Catholic, Evangelical-Lutheran and Baptist). However, the school had to close in 2004.
