The UEFA U-19 European Women (English: UEFA Women's Championship UNDER19 ) is a competition for European national teams for women under 19 years. The competition, which is organized by UEFA , has been held annually as a tournament since 1997 . The current title holder is France's selection . The record winner is the German selection . The competition also serves as a qualification for the U-20 World Cup every two years .
history
Initially, the age limit for the competition was 18 years. The first edition of the competition was played without a final tournament. From the quarterfinals onwards, the rounds were played back and forth. In 1999 a final tournament was held for the first time. The four qualified teams played against each other in the league system . The team with the highest points became European champions. Sweden became European champions thanks to the better direct comparison against Germany . A year later, the top two teams played a final. In 2001, the four teams played the European champions in the knockout system . The final tournament has been held in today's mode since 2002. The age limit of 19 instead of the previous 18 has also been in effect since 2002. Germany is the record European champion with six titles.
mode
The competition is held in three phases. First there are two qualifying rounds. The strongest nations will be seeded for the second qualifying round. In each qualifying round, groups of four teams are formed, with one nation acting as the host. Within the groups, each team plays each other once.
The following mode currently applies: The registered national teams are divided into eleven groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up automatically reach the second qualifying round. Then there are the two best thirds in the group. To determine the best third party in the group, only the respective results against the group winners and runners-up are used. The 24 qualified teams will be divided into six groups of four teams each in the second qualifying round. The six group winners and the best runner-up in the group are qualified for the final round alongside the host.
The eight participants in the final round will be divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the group, each team plays each other once. The two teams with the highest points reach the semi-finals. There the winner of group A plays against the second in group B and vice versa. The semi-final winners finally contest the final.
