The UEFA Super Cup , also known as the European Supercup or UEFA Super Cup , has been a Supercup competition in football that has been held annually since 1972 . It has been organized by UEFA since 1973 . It will be decided in a game between the winner of the Champions League and the Europa League . The record winners of this competition are AC Milan and FC Barcelona , each with five titles.
history
The main initiator of the competition was Anton Witkamp, a reporter for the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf . In a phase in which the Dutch football teams played a formative role in European club football (between 1969 and 1972, Dutch clubs made the final of the European Cup four times in a row ; three times they were victorious) he wanted to underpin the supremacy of Dutch football with an additional competition .
The winner of the European Cup Winners' Cup was seen as a suitable opponent for the winner of the 1972 national championship competition, Ajax Amsterdam . This competition was won by the Glasgow Rangers in 1972 . A request from Witkamp and Jaap van Praag (the then President of Ajax) was rejected by UEFA, as Glasgow was suspended from the European Cup for one year after rioting by its supporters. Therefore, the first edition of the competition was held by private agreements between the two clubs in January 1973 on the occasion of the centenary of the Rangers.
After that, UEFA took over hosting the competition, but recognized the first event (and Ajax's victory). Until 1997, with three exceptions, the competition was played back and forth. Until the European Cup Winners 'Cup was abolished in 1999, its winners competed in the UEFA Supercup against the representative of the European Cup Winners' Cup (renamed the UEFA Champions League in 1992). The winning team of the UEFA Cup (renamed the UEFA Europa League in 2009) has qualified for it since 2000.
From 1998 to 2012, the competition took place regularly in just one game at the Stade Louis II in Monaco in August before the start of the new European Cup season. Until then, the clubs were relatively independent in terms of scheduling and organization of the matches, but since then UEFA has been solely responsible for organization and marketing . The match day in Monaco has also been used by UEFA for several years to draw the group stages for the Champions League and Europa League in a media-effective setting. The Supercup has been held at different venues since 2013. The first venue was the Eden Aréna , the Slavia Prague stadium . In 2014 the Supercup took place at the Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff , in 2015 in the Boris Paitschadze National Stadium in Tbilisi and in 2016 in the Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim . In 2017 it was played in the Philip II Arena in Skopje .
So far there have been eight events with German participation, with FC Bayern Munich winning the title for the first time in 2013 . In 1974, two German clubs, FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Magdeburg, faced each other, but the GDR representative Magdeburg was not allowed to participate by its own association (the DFV ).
So far, the Supercup has been won 25 times by the national champions or Champions League winners, 12 times by the cup winners and 8 times by the UEFA Cup and Europa League winners. So far, only Ajax Amsterdam, AC Milan and Real Madrid have managed to defend the title the following year.
In August 2019, the French woman Stéphanie Frappart was nominated for the first time by UEFA as a referee for an important competitive match in men's football; On August 14, 2019, she was in charge of the UEFA Supercup match between Champions League winners Liverpool FC and Europa League winners Chelsea FC in Istanbul .
