The Münchner Volkshochschule (MVHS) is the largest adult education center in Germany and was founded at the end of the 19th century. Their program for the state capital of Munich and the municipality of Grünwald in the south of Munich includes over 19,000 courses , seminars , workshops , lectures , symposia , excursions , ( city ) tours , exhibitions , study trips , forums and cultural events, which have around 250,000 participants ( Status: Jan. 2020).

The program is divided into the following program areas:

Open academy

The focus here is on public discourse and knowledge transfer in the areas of culture, (urban) politics and science with panel discussions, symposia, dialogues, lectures, readings, cultural events and exhibitions by the aspects gallery. The Open Academy sees itself as a forum that deals with questions that affect everyone and thus also provides impetus for Munich's urban culture and politics by taking up, discussing and deepening relevant topics.

Health, nutrition and cooking culture

This program area is divided into the areas of health informative, health active, health active for seniors as well as cooking culture and nutritional knowledge.

The MVHS is in the field of health education with over 2,000 events annually the nation's largest provider of prevention courses and information sessions on health topics . The environmental education takes place mainly in the ecological education center (ÖBZ). This is part of the MVHS operation, the other half of which is used by the Munich Environment Center.

Culture, art, creativity

Around a quarter of all participants in the Munich Adult Education Center (approx. 50,000 annually) take advantage of the cultural-art-creativity program. With over 4,000 offers annually, it is - measured by the number of events - the largest program area at the MVHS.

German and Integration

The MVHS addresses immigrants and their family members with the German integration courses. It offers general integration courses (A1 to B1) as well as special integration courses with literacy for women and young people.

Learning barrier-free

With this educational offer, the Münchner Volkshochschule addresses people with and without disabilities who want or have to learn in a different way. Project “mona lea”: Qualification and integration

Senior Adult Education Center

The focus here is on areas of learning and action that are of interest to older people, because lifelong learning is an element of educational work at the Munich Adult Education Center.

Youth and education

The Young Adult Education Center is aimed at young people and young adults. Young people can choose from over 70 events in the fields of art, languages, fashion, music, cooking, media, politics or work. In addition to learning aids, the learning studio offers courses on exam preparation.

In all of the offers, young people have the opportunity to try things out with their peers and discover new things. All events at the Junge Volkshochschule are offered at significantly reduced prices.

"Starting instead of waiting" project

This project is aimed at young people with a migration background who want to catch up on a secondary school leaving certificate. Here, too, a good knowledge of German is a prerequisite, whereby the participants receive additional support from the area of German as a second language . In addition, job-related basic qualifications are acquired here.

FLÜB & S project - Refugees at work and at school

In the FLÜB & S project, underage refugees have the opportunity to obtain a secondary school diploma or a qualifying school diploma through educational measures . For this they receive special funding in German as a second language and are supported in developing career prospects and in applying for a training position .

The “Volks-Hochschul-Verein München e. V. ”was launched in 1896 and is considered the forerunner of the Munich adult education center. Ten years later, the "Academic Workers' Courses e. V. “founded. Finally, both associations merged in 1923 to form the “Volkshochschule München e. V. "

The first office was set up in the Isartor , where the Valentin Museum is now located , and in 1930 100 events with 90 lecturers were offered in the summer course. English, French, Italian, Spanish and Hungarian could also be learned.

At that time there was already a “women's program” that comprised ten courses and reflected the need and tradition of the time: “The woman as ruler in the house and kitchen”, “How do I maintain my joie de vivre despite the most economical management?” Or “The woman as the spiritual center of the house ”. Such titles were in great demand at the time.

In 1933 the “Volkshochschule München e. V. ”of the“ Capital of the Movement ”established the first adult education center in Germany to serve the Nazi state . But this could not avert the synchronization and the associated dissolution of the adult education center.

After the end of the Second World War , the “Münchner Volkshochschule” was founded in spring 1946 with the blessing of the American military government . The first MVHS curriculum with 130 courses was approved by the American military authorities on April 3, 1946. The founding fathers of the Munich Adult Education Center at that time included the Lord Mayor of Munich Karl Scharnagl , the second mayor Thomas Wimmer , the city library director Hans Ludwig Held and the city school councilor Anton Fingerle , who designed the program with almost 100 lecturers. The range of courses remained rather modest until the end of the 1950s.

An important step for the Munich adult education center was the acquisition of the Buchenried house in Leoni on the east bank of Lake Starnberg in 1953, which has since served as a permanent place of learning for conferences, weekend and weekend events - with guest houses and restaurants to accommodate and board the participants.

It was not until 1960 that the MVHS was able to move into its own premises. Before that, she was housed in the offices of the New Town Hall. In the 1970s, after the Olympic Games in 1973 , the Munich Adult Education Center opened the Health Park in the Olympic Park , which from then on provided important impetus for health education as a center for holistic health promotion . In 1977 the Münchner Volkshochschule broke new ground again by offering its events in the various districts of Munich in a way that is close to the people. The first branch office was opened in Aubing - four urban centers in the north, south, west and east of Munich with over 17 branch offices followed. In 2009 a new branch office was opened again in the Neuhauser Trafo in Nymphenburger Strasse near Rotkreuzplatz - more are to follow in the next few years. The Munich adult education center also plans and organizes the adult education program for the community of Grünwald south of Munich.

In the 1980s, the move of the Munich adult education center into the new cultural center - the Gasteig - in Munich's Haidhausen district gave the MVHS a special boost, making it the largest urban adult education institution in Germany and Europe. Childcare facilities have also been set up at the Munich Adult Education Center, offering free childcare for 2 to 6 year olds while the parents or one parent attends an MVHS event - the events are marked in the program with a corresponding symbol.

In 1994 the MVHS was converted into a non-profit GmbH , whose partner is the state capital Munich and whose supervisory board was chaired by Munich's Lord Mayor Christian Ude . In 1997 the Association of Sponsors and Friends of MVHS e. V. founded in order to sustainably support the educational work of the Munich Adult Education Center. It promotes projects with which new milieus or target groups are addressed or finances research projects.

In July 2001 the Ecological Education Center (ÖBZ) was opened. Since then, events on classic environmental education have taken place in this environmental education center in the east of Munich , as well as offers on sustainable urban development or on social challenges from global, economic, technical and economic developments.

In 2013 the renovation of Haus Buchenried was completed. The seminar and conference center on Lake Starnberg had been completely renovated and expanded since 2009 by the state capital of Munich and the Munich adult education center.

In March 2017 the new education center in "Einstein" near Max-Weber-Platz at Einsteinstraße 28 was opened. Two event halls, more than 60 classrooms, health rooms, the children's house offer space, light and air, the café "Über den Tellerrand" and a campus.

The MVHS now has over 19,000 courses and events in its program every year. The offer is used by around 240,000 Munich residents.
