In 1841 the area was first organized as the Salmon Brook Plantation . The original name was Township No. 13, Third Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T13 R3 WELS). Washburn became a town on February 25, 1861. The town was named Washburn after the governor of Maine Israel . Arthur R. Gould , who founded the Aroostook Valley Railroad and in 1910 also connected Washburn to the railway network, was essential for the development of the area . There are several villages in the town area: Adaline, Bugbee, Crouseville, Jacobs, Shaw a railroad station, Wade Road a former railroad station and Washburn. The Aroostook River Bridge, a steel bridge, crosses the Aroostook River.
