About this picture

Horka ( Upper Sorbian Hórka ) is a Saxon municipality in the district of Görlitz . The community, consisting of the three districts of Biehain , Horka and Mückenhain , belongs to the administrative association Weißer Schöps / Neisse .

geography

The municipality of Horka is located in the eastern part of the district in a wooded area near the border with Poland , about 18 km northwest of the district town of Görlitz and 4 km east of Niesky . With its extensive forests, the area belongs to the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape .

history

The place name comes from the Upper Sorbian word hórka (Old Sorbian gorka , in German "hill") and therefore means "hill village".

Horka was first mentioned in 1305 in a Görlitz town book. From 1377 to 1396 the region belonged to the Duchy of Lusatia , from 1635 to 1806 to the Electorate of Saxony and then to 1815 to the Kingdom of Saxony . As a result of the Congress of Vienna , the municipality of Horka came to Prussia and was assigned to the province of Silesia . From 1919 to 1938 and again from 1941 Horka belonged to the Province of Lower Silesia . Saxon again after the Second World War , the community belonged to the Niesky district , since 1952 with the dissolution of the states in the Dresden district . Horka carried the name Wehrkirch between 1936 and 1947 as part of the National Socialist Germanization of Sorbian place names .

On March 1, 1994, the communities of Biehain and Mückenhain were incorporated into Horka.

Attractions

The cultural monuments are included in the list of cultural monuments in Horka .

Evangelical fortified church

Horka fortified church

The fortified church dates from the early 13th century and is Romanesque-Gothic. It is surrounded by a defensive wall that was built in the 12th or 13th century. In the foundations of the oldest part of the wall, an approximately 1000 year old skeleton was discovered in a Christian-looking grave during excavation work. The fortified church has a crypt with several stone coffins. There are still bones in them.

traffic

The federal highway 4 runs south of the community. It can be reached via the Kodersdorf connection, about 5 km away .

The Horka Pbf station links the Węgliniec – Roßlau (Elbe) and Berlin – Görlitz lines . Horka is in the track triangle of these routes, trains run on the route: Görlitz – Niesky – Hoyerswerda (without stopping in Horka, 2010–2018 only as SEV ), Cottbus – Görlitz and the Hoyerswerda – Horka – Węgliniec route as a heavily frequented freight line. As part of the expansion of this important freight route in east-west traffic, the last section from Knappenrode via Horka to the border bridge was electrified by 2018. The branch line of the former Horka – Rothenburg – Priebus small railway branching off in Horka is no longer served.

To the east of the passenger station, there is another freight station, Horka Gbf station, which functions as a border station to the Republic of Poland. The Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Lower Silesia is planning to set up a new Horka Mitte stop, which will enable the Görlitz – Hoyerswerda regional railways to stop at the connecting curve at the Rothenburger Straße level crossing. However, there are delays because Deutsche Bahn wants to change the previous plans with a platform height of 55 centimeters, although the vehicles and the new platforms towards Hoyerswerda also have this height.
