Catalog raisonné Thomas Eakins
This article lists the paintings, drawings, and sculptures made by Thomas Eakins . Since there is no catalog raisonné , this is a compilation of the existing catalogs.
background
Eakins sold few paintings in his lifetime. After his death, the unsold works became the property of his widow, Susan Macdowell Eakins , who kept them in their shared apartment. From then on she dedicated her life to her husband's legacy. Until her death, she donated numerous important works to various museums around the world, in particular the Philadelphia Museum of Art profited from the donations.
After her death in 1938, the household was dissolved to put the house up for auction. When the former Eakins student Charles Bregler entered the house, he was shocked by what he found: “Most tragic and pitiful sight I ever saw. Every room was cluttered with debris as all the contents of the various drawers, closets etc were thrown upon the floor as they removed the furniture. All the life casts were smashed… I never want to see anything like this again. ” The number of works lost or destroyed remains unknown.
Bregler picked up the remains, mainly drawings and studies. He remained silent about his findings and hardly showed them. After his death, this collection went to his second wife, who also kept the works under lock and key. Shortly before her death, she sold the collection to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts .
historiography
In the early 1930s, Dowell Eakins had the collection inventoried by Lloyd Goodrich , who also interviewed Eakins acquaintances who were still alive and studied Eakin's notes. In 1933 he published Thomas Eakins: His Life and Works . Although incomplete, not illustrated, and without Eakins photographs, this was the first attempt to compile a catalog of Eakins.
In the 1970s Gordon Hendricks published the two catalogs The Photographs of Thomas Eakins (1972; ISBN 0-670-55261-5 , an illustrated catalog of photographs from Eakins' environment: "Circle of Eakins") and The Life and Work of Thomas Eakins ( 1974; ISBN 0-670-42795-0 , with works that are still missing from Goodrich).
Goodrich returned to the subject in the 1980s and started the three volume Thomas Eakins . The third volume, created as a catalog, was no longer produced after his death in 1987. He donated his papers to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which never finished the work.
Art historians only found out about the Bregler collection in 1987. In 1997 Kathleen Foster published the Thomas Eakins Rediscovered Bregler catalog . ( ISBN 0-300-06174-9 )
Organization of this list
As far as possible, the sorting follows Goodrich's catalog and his designs for the third volume. His catalog is divided into three parts:
- Juvenalia - Early works from before Eakins' stay in Paris, identified by the letter J.
- Works from the 1933 catalog - "G" followed by a number.
- Works from the unfinished list from the 1980s - "G" followed by a number and a letter.
Works from the Bregler collection bear the number from Thomas Eakins Rediscovered .

- ↑ “Previous to Goodrich's monograph, only short essays on Eakins and checklists of his works had been published. NO monographic studies or commentaries on the artist appeared during his lifetime. Most notable of the early works on Eakins are Alan Burroughs 'three articles which appeared in The Arts during 1923 and 1924 and Henri Marceau's essay and checklist (announcing the receipt of Susan Eakins' bequest). According to Goodrich, he was encouraged to write the Eakins monograph by close friend Reginald Marsh , an avid admirer of the older artist. " - Milroy, 30, footnote 9.

- ↑ a b c d e "On the basis of Susan Eakins 'opinion, Goodrich listed twelve paintings in his 1933 catalog raisonne of Eakins' works which he identified as having been executed by the artist in Paris. All are small oil sketches measuring approximately eighteen by twelve inches in size: two studies from the antique; one of a ram's head and nine remaining studies from the male or female model. Of this dozen five have since disappeared, including the antique studies, the ram's head and two studies Goodrich described as portraits of an unidentified fellow student ". Milroy 188-189. A chapter note for this paragraph says: "Goodrich, Thomas Eakins (1933) cat. Nos. 19-30. Goodrich cat no. 23 (Study of a Girl's Head) is now in a private collection; no. 24 (Study of a Girl's Head) is in the Hirshhorn Museum; nos. 25–27 are in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and no. 30 (A Negress) is in the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
