Wieland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wieland is a male first name and family name .

Origin and meaning

Wieland is the New High German variant ( Old High German Wiolant ) of a Germanic hero name , which is also attested as Old Norse Völundr and Old English Wēland and denotes a mythical blacksmith . The name itself is traced back to Old Norse vél "art, artifice, cunning" and is more precisely understood as the present participle of the associated verb véla "artfully create, deceive, cheat". He therefore means “the artist who creates, deceives”.

The family name also seems to go back to the name of the mythical blacksmith, whose legend was probably still alive in the 14th century and through personal names such as Wieland the blacksmith (Freiburg 1341) or Meister Wieland (builder of the Liegnitz Peter and Paul Cathedral , 1333) is occupied. This makes the conception of the blacksmith's professional name plausible .
