William Woods (politician)

William Woods (* 1790 in Washington County , New York , † August 7, 1837 in Bath , New York) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Woods received a modest education. In 1813 he moved to Bath in Steuben County . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Bath. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1823 .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Adams-Clay faction. He was elected to the 18th Congress in a by-election in the 28th  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William B. Rochester . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on November 3, 1923. He retired from the after March 3, 1825 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. Between 1827 and 1835 he was guardianship and probate judge in Steuben County. During this time he was again a member of the New York State Assembly in 1828. He died on August 7, 1837 in Bath. His body was then interred in Grove Cemetery .
