Stegen is a municipality in the southern Black Forest in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald ( Baden-Württemberg , Germany ).

Geographical location
The municipality of Stegen, located in the settlement belt of Freiburg im Breisgau in the upper Dreisamtal , is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park about 8 km (as the crow flies ) east of Freiburg. It spreads north of the confluence of the Rotbach and Wagensteigbach to the Dreisam . The Eschbach (a tributary of the Dreisam) flows through its core town.

Neighboring communities of Stegen are: St. Peter in the northeast, Buchenbach in the southeast, Kirchzarten in the south, Glottertal in the north and Freiburg im Breisgau in the west.
Community structure
The municipality of Stegen with the municipalities of Eschbach in the Black Forest and Wittental, which were independent until the 1970s, includes 34 villages, hamlets, Zinken, farms and houses. The former municipality of Eschbach in the Black Forest includes the Zinken Berlachen, Engelberg, Hintereschbach, Obertal, Reckenberg, Steurental and Untertal, the farms Domilishof, Gabelsdobel, Grundhof, Kappdobel, Molzenhof, Salzberg, Scherlehäuslehof, Scherlenzendobel and Schönberg and the residential areas Fußhof-Geiger-Berghäusle, and Hilzihäusle. The village of Stegen, the hamlets of Oberbirken and Unterbirken, the Zinken Rechtenbach and the Schloss Weiler complex belong to the municipality of Stegen within the boundaries of 1974. The hamlets of Wittental and Attental, the farms of Albrechtshof, Andresenhof, Baldenwegerhof, Bankenhof, Bankscherhof, Hannisen (Hansen) -hof, Hugenhof and Rauferhof belong to the former municipality of Wittental. The main town of Stegen is further divided into the settlements of Stegen, Weiler, Ober- and Unterbirken and Rechtenbach. The original core was the rule of Weiler, which is closely connected with the Lords of Weiler, mentioned since the 11th century. These were probably ministerials of the Zähringer and helped, for example, with the search for a suitable location for the St. Peter monastery . From the 14th century onwards, it was owned by various noble families from Upper Austria until the barons and later counts of Kageneck came to the Dreisamtal as the last landlords. The name "Stegen" is first attested in 1510. In 1810, the place was assigned to the Grand Duchy of Baden and initially assigned to the Stabsamt St. Peter (Oberamt St. Peter) and in 1819 to the Landamt Freiburg. In 1890, Rechtenbach, which still belonged to the Schnewlin von Landeck family, was united with Stegen.
In 1929, the Order of the Sacred Heart Priests rented the grounds of the former castle and set up a religious house there. After the Second World War , the private grammar school and boarding college St. Sebastian was established there. The boarding school was given up in 1997 and the school became the responsibility of the school foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg in 1998 .
On July 1, 1974, the community Wittental was incorporated into Stegen. Today's municipality of Stegen was formed on January 1, 1975 by the merger of the two municipalities of Stegen and Eschbach in the Black Forest.
Districts
Eschbach
The Eschbachtal with its side valleys was mentioned for the first time in 1112 and belonged to a part of the monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest . The other part, first Dinghof of Einsiedeln Monastery , finally came to the barons of Sickingen until they sold their property to the state of Baden in 1808. The two parts of Eschbach were united in 1811 to form a municipality in the Freiburg Landamt. From February 23, 1973 until it was united with Stegen, the community had the addition of the name in the Black Forest .
Wittental
At the beginning of the 19th century, the community of Wittental was created from the settlements of Attental, Wittental and the Baldenwegerhof. Ober- and Unterwittental were first mentioned in the 13th century in the property register of the St. Märgen Monastery . The rule came at the end of the 16th century to the barons of Sickingen-Hohenburg . Wittental formed a community association with Zarten until 1813 the union of Attentals with Wittental took place.

In Stegen there is the Catholic parish Herz Jesu, the Catholics in Eschbach belong to the St. Jakobus parish, the Protestant reconciliation parish Stegen also looks after Protestant Christians in Buchenbach, St. Peter and St. Märgen.

Mayoress
On January 18, 2015, Fränzi Kleeb was elected mayor in the first ballot with 68% of the vote. She took office on April 3, 2015. She is the first female mayor in the Dreisamtal. Previously, Siegfried Kuster, who was also non-party, was mayor of the municipality of Stegen for 24 years.

The municipality of Stegen was awarded the coat of arms certificate for the coat of arms after the municipal reform in 1977:
- In gold (yellow) an uprooted ash tree with black trunk and green crown, in which three golden (yellow) branches in the form of ash leaves, in front of the trunk a continuous red plank path (footbridge) .
The ash stands for the district of Eschbach, but also symbolizes the stream of the same name, which runs through the entire length of the municipality. The Bohlweg or Steg, which was already used as a seal image by the old community of Stegen, is reminiscent of the wooden paths through the marshy terrain at the exit of the Eschbach Valley. They once gave the farms above the Meierhof Weiler the name that today applies to the entire community.

- Parish church St. Jakobus in Stegen-Eschbach , with high altar, side altars, pulpit, cross altar and Pietà by Matthias Faller (created in 1764 for the Lindenberg chapel near St. Peter)
- Stegen-Weiler Castle, the castle of the local lords, most recently the Counts of Kageneck , on whose grounds the St. Sebastian College is now located. The oldest part is the castle chapel dedicated to St. Sebastian .
- Snake chapel
- Herz-Jesu-Kirche, Catholic parish church, built 1959–1962 on the site of the former Stegen-Weiler Castle.
Natural monuments
Stegen is located on the Black Forest cross-way between Freiburg and Lake Constance , a long-distance hiking trail run by the Black Forest Association , which leads past many natural monuments.
Regular events
Since 1971, the FSV Rot-Weiß Stegen has been organizing the now well-known Whitsun sports festival.
The Highland Games have been held in Wittental every two years since 1999 .

Stegen is on the outskirts of Freiburg im Breisgau. Many residents work in the nearby city, which is easily accessible by car via the 133 national road. The bus line 7216 of the Südbadenbus- Gesellschaft connects the community with Kirchzarten and Freiburg on the one hand, and with St. Peter, St. Märgen and Hinterzarten in the Black Forest on the other . In Kirchzarten there is also an option to change to the Höllentalbahn .
education
- In the community there is a primary and secondary school with a Werkrealschule and a primary school in Eschbach.
- The state-recognized Catholic general education college college St. Sebastian is attended by students from the entire Dreisamtal and from Freiburg. It is located on the site of the former castle. The school foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg has been the sponsor since 1998 .
- There is also a supra-regional education and advice center for the hearing impaired (BBZ) in Stegen , a state school with boarding school. It offers educational opportunities from kindergarten through all types of schools to high schools.
- Many students also attend the nearby Marie-Curie-Gymnasium in Kirchzarten.
