The Austrian Ice Hockey League 2001/02 was played with nine clubs. The defending champion was the EC KAC , the new champion was the EC VSV , who prevailed against the EHC Black Wings Linz in the final .

A total of nine clubs took part in the championship. The previous year's last DEK Schellander no longer existed, the penultimate EV Zeltweg now entered the second highest division, the National League . The Vienna Capitals were a new addition , with which, after the departure of the Wiener EV after the 1999/00 season , a Viennese club took part in the top division for the first time.

mode

The nine clubs played against each other 4 times in the regular season, with the points halved after the first half of the season. In the event of a tie, extra time ( Sudden Victory Overtime ) was played. The winner thus determined received two points, the loser one.

Then a play-off was played, with all matches being played in best-of-seven mode. In the quarter-finals, the 1st of the basic round met the 8th, the 2nd against the 7th, the 3rd against the 6th and the 4th against the 5th.
