Abraham (name)
Abraham is a male given name and a family name .
Origin and meaning of the name
Abraham is the first patriarch of Israel in the biblical narratives . The Hebrew forms of the name Abram (only Gen 11, 26-17.5; Neh 9.7; 1 Chron 1.26) or Abraham (all other Old Testament passages) are used. The name Abram has equivalents in Akkadian and Ugaritic texts; the first syllable means common semi table "father", the second can to Accadian ra'amu (love) or west semi table (may be increased) rwm be recycled. The possible meanings result from the second derivation:
- "The father is exalted"
- "He is sublime in relation to his father", an indication of the high descent of the name bearer.
A folk etymological explanation, the traceability of which to a Hebrew equivalent to Arabic Ruham, numerous but doubtful, probably represents Gen 17.5: Abraham is "father of many (peoples)".
