Alexandra
Alexandra ( Greek Αλεξάνδρα ) is a feminine given name .
Origin and meaning
Derived from the Greek words ἀλέξειν alexein "(be) protect, defend" and ἀνδρός andros (= genitive form of ἀνήρ anēr "man"), Alexandra means "the (foreign) men defending person", "the defender" or "the protector ". In the linear B spelling A-re-ka-sa-da-ra (= Aleksa (n) dra ) the name is around 1200 BC. Already attested in Mycenaean times.
Also in Mycenaean times, a patron goddess Alexandra was venerated in Amyklai : on an inscription column showing a relief of a goddess playing lyre, the words “in the sanctuary of Alexandra” can be found. The cult of Alexandra is also attested for Leuctra in Laconia and for the Daunians . This Alexandra is also equated with the Trojan seer Kassandra , for example in the dramatic monologue Alexandra von Lycophron.
