Armenia is a Colombian municipality ( municipio ) and the capital of the Quindío department in the coffee-growing region (eje cafetero) .
geography
Armenia is centrally located in the country, 290 kilometers west of Bogotá , equidistant to the south of Medellín and just a little closer north-northeast of Cali at an average altitude of 1480 meters in the foothills of the Central Cordillera of Colombia and covers an area of 121 square kilometers.
The municipality borders in the north on Circasia and Montenegro , in the east on Salento and Calarcá , in the south on Calarcá and in the west on La Tebaida and Montenegro.
The climate is moderate due to the altitude, the annual average temperature is between 18 and 22 ° C.

The municipality of Armenia has 302,723 inhabitants, of which 294,658 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Armenia was founded on October 14, 1889 by Jesús María Ocampo . It was initially called Villa Holguín and was later renamed Armenia in memory of the massacre of the Armenians in 1894-1896 and the genocide of the Armenians during the First World War.
On December 17, 1952, Pope Pius XII. the Roman Catholic diocese of Armenia was established.
On January 25, 1999, Armenia was hit by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that killed around 1200 people. About 60 percent of the buildings were destroyed. The reconstruction was essentially completed within ten years.
Economy and tourism
Coffee cultivation is important in the area, with the Parque Nacional del Café coffee theme park just a few kilometers away. The city itself has a diverse range of trade, industry, services, its own airport, the Aeropuerto Internacional El Edén , IATA code AXM, and several universities.
Sports
The football club Deportes Quindío is based in Armenia . The club played in the first Colombian league since 1951 , in which it became champions in 1956. After the second relegation, Deportes Quindío is currently playing in the second division . The club plays its home games at the Estadio Centenario de Armenia , which was inaugurated in 1988 and has a capacity of around 25,700 seats.
In Armenia, games of the Copa America 2001 , the U-20 soccer South American championship 2005 and the U-20 soccer world championship 2011 were played.
