Baby Driver is an American-British action - thriller from Edgar Wright , who as part of the March 11, 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival celebrated its premiere. The film was released in US cinemas on June 28, 2017 and in German cinemas on July 27, 2017.

action

Young Miles, nicknamed Baby because of his young looks, is a very talented driver. Since the accidental death of his parents, he has lived as an orphan in Atlanta and works as a getaway driver in robberies organized by gang boss Doc. From his days as a teenage car cracker, Baby owes Doc a lot. Because of his tinnitus , babies almost always wear headphones in their ears and try to drown out the constant whistling with the music on their iPods .

Baby has almost paid off his debts to Doc and wants to leave his criminal life behind, which his deaf adoptive father Joseph advises him to do. He falls in love with Debora, who works as a waitress in a diner , but tells her nothing about his criminal activity. He merely implies that he works as a driver and makes her believe he is driving celebrities. After paying off his debt, Doc uses open threats to urge him to participate in another action. In a branch of Post uncollateralised store money orders that can make Doc too much money. The robbery is supposed to be carried out by the extroverted gun fanatic Bats, the handsome and former stockbroker Buddy and his girlfriend Darling.

At a gun shop with the "Butcher", a contact from Docs, Bats starts a shooting after correctly recognizing the gun dealers as police officers. Doc, for whom contact with the corrupt police officers was fundamental to his business, now angrily wants to call off the attack, but is changed. When the baby tries to flee from the common quarters at night, Buddy and Bats hold him back forcibly and make it unmistakably clear to him that his disabled adoptive father and the unsuspecting Debora are now also in danger.

During the robbery, Baby sees the postal worker in the car who served him while spying on the counter. He uses gestures to keep her from going to her place of work. After Bats shoots a security guard brought by the woman in front of his eyes, Baby refuses to drive off. He ignores the threats from his accomplices and then suddenly rams a truck parked in front of them in such a way that a protruding piece of steel penetrates the windshield and kills the Bats sitting in the passenger seat. Baby, buddy and darling flee separately on foot, with darling and buddy opening fire on the arriving police officers. They meet again in a parking lot; Darling is killed in an exchange of fire with the police, whereupon Buddy also fires at Baby.

Baby manages to escape; he places Joseph in an assisted living facility and meets Debora in the diner. Buddy is already waiting for him here, with the intention of killing them both. Baby can shoot Buddy and eventually flee to Doc. Here they are ambushed by the Butcher's men in the underground car park, who are killed by Doc. However, he is shot during the exchange of fire and finally run over and killed at the same location by Buddy, who has meanwhile stolen a police car. After a hunt through the parking garage, Baby and Debora lie in wait for him and push his car over the edge of the parking garage into the depths. Before Buddy, who escaped from the vehicle before the fall, can shoot the baby he has overwhelmed, he is attacked with a crowbar by Debora. So Baby can shoot him again, so that he falls over the edge of the parking garage floor onto the now exploding car.

After the successful escape from the city, the car now driven by Debora ends up in a roadblock of the police, whereby Baby is arrested after he has prevented Debora from trying to escape again. In the subsequent process, various witnesses testify to the robbery and testify to his positive character. At the end of the trial, Baby is sentenced to 25 years in prison with the prospect of early release after five years. After his release, Debora is waiting for him with a car.

production

Staff and cast

Directed by Edgar Wright , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It is the first script that he worked entirely on his own. Wright had released the first page of the script before the film premiered. As an important source of inspiration Wright called the film Driver of Walter Hill in 1978 (where it comes to an emotionally distant getaway driver, whose main and only personal property, a Walkman with your favorite music is). Wright conducted three interviews with Hill, and in the original English version, Hill made a cameo as the translator's voice during the hearing at the end of the film. At a press conference during a pre-screening of the film, Wright said that he first dreamed of a car chase jukebox film musical back in 1995, when its leading actor Ansel Elgort was just born, and thanks to the secured funding, four years from 2007 had to do research and talk to ex-convicts and real bank robbers, which he wanted to make sure the plot was as realistic as possible.

Ansel Elgort , here at the film's premiere in Australia, took on the title role of Baby
Lily James plays baby's love, Debora

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in December 2016, Wright said, "I always wanted to make an action film that was powered by music." Wright said that was a central element in his previous films, and he took it to the extreme want to drive by putting a character at the center of the action with Baby who listens to music all the time and therefore always wears plugs in his ears to drown out a tinnitus . Wright went on to say of the character that Baby speaks very little because he lives in a "kind of audio existence." The character was named after the song Baby Driver from the album Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel , which is also played in the film.

Wright had a music video for the song in 2003 Blue song the band Mint Royale with a similar protagonist rotated in the Noel Fielding the music-loving getaway driver of a group played bank robbers. This music video also served as inspiration for Baby Driver .

Ansel Elgort took on the title role of Baby. Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey , with whom Elgort also appeared in front of the camera for the film Billionaire Boys Club , plays gang boss Doc. Also Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx took on the role of Bats, who accompanies Baby on a dangerous assignment. Other companions also include Jon Hamm and Eiza González , who can be seen in the roles of Buddy and his girlfriend Darling. The tattooed criminal JD is played by the Korean-American actor Lanny Joon . Lily James plays baby's love, Debora, and CJ Jones plays his deaf and dumb roommate, Joseph. Lance Palmer plays baby's father and Sky Ferreira plays his mother. As a boy, Baby is played in flashbacks by Hudson Meek . Child actor Brogan Hall plays Doc's eight-year-old nephew Samm.

Filming and choreography of the action scenes

The shooting took place on Interstate 85, which connects to Interstate 75 in Atlanta

Wright worked for Baby Driver with cameraman Bill Pope , with whom he first worked on the film Scott Pilgrim Against the Rest of the World . Filming took place in Atlanta and New Orleans . In addition, outdoor shots were taken in the city of Dunwoody in Georgia . The car chases on the freeway were filmed in the middle of the day on Interstate 85 in Atlanta, which was closed twice in sections for this purpose. The name of the bank, the fictional Perimeter Trust , which Docs gang wants to rob in the film, was chosen based on the Perimeter Center in Atlanta and the Perimeter Center Parkway. In the film, Baby drives a red Subaru WRX STI . No post-production on the computer was necessary for the film , and almost no green screen recordings were used. However, Wright added black and white fantasies of Baby in several places, in which Baby imagines how he can escape even the most delicate of situations. Regarding the difficulties with the shooting, Wright said that these often resulted when they followed the other vehicles in the commando and the transmission signal was disturbed, so that he could no longer speak directly to the actors.

The action scenes were choreographed by performance artist, choreographer, designer and founder of the Sweat Spot dance laboratory , Ryan Heffington , who has already won awards for several music videos that he choreographed, including the video for Chandelier by Sia , which was published as part of MTV Video Music Awards 2014 received an award. The pace of the choreography of the scenes showing stunts with cars was dictated by the film's soundtrack. Wright had choreographed such scenes to the music in other films such as Shaun of the Dead , in Shaun of the Dead for the song Don't Stop Me Now .

Film music and sound design

The film music was composed by Oscar winner Steven Price . In addition, the viewer hears the music that Baby hears in the film. The tracks that Baby hears also form the soundtrack to the film. Normally, for the soundtrack of a film, directors choose pieces of music that are intended to accompany what is happening on the screen. In Baby Driver , however, Wright lets his titular hero hear music that seems to decide his fate, according to Variety's Peter Debruge . Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts explains that the obligatory background music, as is usually the case in films, does not sound in the background, but is a permanent and penetrating part of the plot. According to Baumgardt, the main character Baby himself sets the pace for the following scenes through the selection of songs, which ranges from the central piece Easy by The Commodores to jazz and blues to Barry White , regardless of whether it is a rapid escape or a leisurely stroll to get coffee. Even Eric Kohn of Indiewire says Wright myself Baby Driver Although described as a car film, which is driven by music, but it's become more of a music film, which was knitted by cars around. The incessantly played music in the film includes songs by Lionel Richie , Isaac Hayes and Queen , who help shape the story of the film, and for Kohn is the best soundtrack to a film of the year. The opening song is the song Bellbottoms by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion . The song Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel , which can be heard in the film , gave the protagonist and the film its name. A piece by Dave Brubeck can also be heard. The first trailer for the film begins with Brubeck's Unsquare Dance . The soundtrack consists of 30 tracks and was released on June 23, 2017 by Columbia Records on CD, as a double album on vinyl record and as a download.

At some points in the film, a bright beep was added to the sound design to express the tinnitus the baby is suffering from. The sound designer Gareth Cousins was honored for his work as part of the Cinema Audio Society Awards 2018th

Marketing and Publishing

The first photos were published in December 2016. A first trailer for the film followed at the beginning of March 2017, and another German trailer was released on April 11, 2017, with the song Radar Love by Golden Earring underlay. The film's early released logo shows the stylized baby wearing his headphones in front of a black cityscape of Atlanta. A first poster for the film, in pink and black, showed a pistol, from which a car emerges instead of a bullet. A motion poster followed in May 2017. The various logos and posters for the film drew a wave of fan art, which was often based on these motifs, and in particular the listening to the music that Baby hears through his headphones in the film. In May 2017 the making-of Stunt Driving Featurette was published, which shows the car drives during the filming and the actors during the stunts. At the beginning of June 2017, a new German trailer called TeKillYah followed , which includes many of these driving maneuvers. In a featurette released in June 2017, Edgar Wright explains how he wrote the script with the soundtrack in mind and then mailed it with the soundtrack to his cast so they could read it to the music and get an idea of how he was going to do it had thought.

The film premiered on March 11, 2017 as part of the South by Southwest Film Festival . From July 3, 2017, the film was presented at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and shown on July 8, 2017 as the closing film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival . The film was released in US cinemas on June 28, 2017 and in German cinemas on July 27, 2017. In Switzerland, Sony Pictures Releasing Switzerland has also scheduled the theatrical release of Baby Driver on July 27, 2017. After an eight-week hiatus from foreign films, Baby Driver hit Chinese cinemas on August 24, 2017. On June 27, 2019, Netflix included the film in its program.

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for depicting violence and bloody exchanges of fire, which corresponds to a release from the age of 17. In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is told with numerous elements typical of the genre and has a clear division into good and bad. In the course of the plot, the intensity and drasticness of the action increase, whereby the violence is never emphasized as an end in itself. [...] Musical and humorous moments always provide relief. The ultimately moral attitude of the protagonist and the film also provide enough emotional hold. "

Reviews

Edgar Wright , here at the premiere of the film in Australia, directed the film and also wrote the script

The film has so far won over 93 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8 out of a possible 10 points. As part of the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards , the film emerged as the winner in the Best Action Movie category . Some critics recognized that Baby Driver was a remake of La La Land because of the central role played by music and vivid cityscapes .

Doris Kuhn of the Süddeutsche Zeitung explains that Edgar Wright allowed himself to move the center of the film willfully, because the attacks that the genre usually revolves around remained on the sidelines and he concentrated on the psychology of his getaway driver: “Baby lives with a deaf-mute black man, so he doesn't have to speak, but can simply disappear into pop history. What he finds there is enough for his needs: He can communicate with the roommate because he puts his fingers on the loudspeaker to feel what mood is emerging. "

Eric Kohn of Indiewire says Baby Driver presenting itself in the form of an elegant, fast fireworks, a synthesis of movement and sound, and you know easy to see why it took so long to finish the film. Crave's William Bibbiani describes Baby Driver as a super cool heist movie that uses music the way the rest of us use the air, and sees it as having the potential to become one of the best car chase films ever.

Jens Balzer from Zeit Online , on the other hand, notes that the spectacular combination of cinematic and musical rhythms begins to wear out quickly, but above all the film suffers from its ever-increasing lust for brutality: “Like the self-referential image-sound montages through penetration If the semiotic innocence is taken away from language, the whole story is deprived of its moral innocence through the seeping in of blood, through the realistic images of actually vulnerable bodies. "Chris Weiß from Musikexpress also thinks that although the music is still the focus, the rest is missing of the film the crazy, the crazy and the genius of the entry.

Gross profit

In North America, the film, which opened in 3,226 theaters there on June 28, 2017, exceeded the studio's expectations and grossed around 39 million US dollars by July 4, Independence Day . The production costs of 34 million US dollars, which the film grossed in its first week after its theatrical release, are offset by worldwide income from cinema screenings of 226.9 million US dollars. The film has so far recorded 414,682 visitors in Germany.
