The Cupa României in the 1978/79 season was the 41st tournament for the Romanian Football Cup . The winner was for the 13th time Steaua Bucharest , which was able to prevail in the final on July 1, 1979 against Sportul Studențesc . As a result, Steaua qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Defending champion Universitatea Craiova was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The clubs of Divizia A only started in the round of the last 32 teams.
