Güssing ( Hungarian Németújvár , Croatian Novigrad ) is a city in Burgenland in Austria . It is a suburb of the district of the same name .

geography

The city is located in southern Burgenland.

  • Güssing (city center) (2734) with Langzeil, Ludwigshof and Rosenberg
  • Krottendorf (219)
  • Saint Nicholas (192)
  • Digging (168)
  • Urbersdorf (236)

Other places are Langzeil, Rosenberg and since September 2006 Ludwigshof, located in the northeast of Güssing, has also been a separate part of the local administration .

history

Güssing's roots go back to a suburbium that arose in the shadow of Güssing Castle and was surrounded by a lenticular hill around the castle rock. In 1427 it was called civitas and in 1459 civitas et suburbium .

Güssing had been a free city with full city rights since the 16th century. In 1619 it was surrounded by a curtain wall and had four parts of the city: suburb (Mühlviertel), lower town (location of Drašković castle ), inner town (monastery church to town hall) and high town.

In 1540 the magnate Franz Batthyány received from Emperor Ferdinand I permission to develop ore mines for Güssing, and in 1549 the Emperor also granted him the right to hold markets in Güssing. There is a market in town every first Monday of the month.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Németújvár ( "German-Neuburg") are used. After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of Saint-Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). 1973 Güssing was raised to the city.

From 1909 until after the end of the Second World War, Güssing had a rail connection via the Güssing Railway to Körmend, which was primarily used to transport timber. After 1945 it seemed pointless to maintain rail operations, not least because, on the one hand, the traffic was only directed to Hungary and, on the other hand, because the “Iron Curtain” now separated the line. Rail traffic was discontinued, the tracks were rotting. Today, the new federal highway 56 between Güssing and Strem mainly runs along the former railway body. The station building in Güssing, built in 1899, has been renovated and is still standing.

Culture and sights

Güssing Castle, with inclined elevator
The nave of the Church of the Visitation of Mary
  • Güssing Castle : The main attraction of the district town is the castle located on a volcanic cone with the exhibition "400 years of artistic creation ", the Gothic castle chapel (with a wooden, neo-Gothic main altar and a very old chest organ and a baroque side altar), the castle museum and the castle restaurant . The Romanesque parish church, which was built around 1200, is located on the site of the cemetery.
  • Franciscan monastery : There is a Franciscan monastery in the village, which at the time was also a corner bastion of the city wall. See also:
  • Church of the Visitation of Mary : built around 1638; the church has numerous architectural renaissance elements. The parament shrine in the sacristy and the valuable library with many unique items from the time of Protestantism are remarkable. The Batthyány family crypt is located under the church . It is the second largest of its kind in Austria, with a magnificent coffin by K. Moll. The shrine of Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann, who was beatified in 2003, can also be found in the church.
  • Arcade construction : In the village there is a two-storey, castle-like arcade construction with beautiful stucco work.
  • Castle of the Drašković family : In the east of the city there is the classicist castle of the Drašković family with Empire furnishings and a Gothic winged altar from 1450 in the castle chapel.

Regular events

  • Musical Güssing: The cultural association has several large events each year. At the end of January the carnival cabaret takes place in the Güssing cultural center. Every year in September a well-known musical is performed, in which professionals and amateurs take part. The musical performer Florian Resetarits has his musical roots with the club.
  • Güssing Castle Games: Güssing was already a cultural center 500 years ago. The theater has always had a high priority. The castle games are a fixed point in the summer cultural program. The actor Frank Hoffmann is the director of the Güssing Cultural Summer, during which plays are performed at Güssing Castle in the summer. The Güssing Castle Association plays summer theater for children and adults on the festival meadow at the foot of the castle.

Economy and Infrastructure

Renewable energy

Under Mayor Peter Vadasz, the city developed an energy concept for independent and sustainable energy generation in the early 1990s.

As a measure for economic development, the European Center for Renewable Energy Güssing (EEE) was founded with EU funding . This should create jobs in the region and slow down the outflow of purchasing power through energy imports. By means of wood gasification , electricity and heat with a value of 20 million euros could be produced in-house on the basis of renewable energy sources. In 2005 Güssing was already generating significantly more heat (57.5 GWh ) and electricity (14 GWh) from renewable raw materials than the city itself needs. In 2013 the power plant was insolvent.

The power plant with wood gasification in Güssing also included a test facility that uses Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to generate a diesel-like biofuel from the product gas .
