Division 1 1959/60

The Division 1 1960/61 was the 23rd staging of the professional French football league. AS Monaco became champions for the first time in their club's history .

The first game day was August 20, 1960, the last game day was June 3, 1961. There was no “winter break”; games were also played on Christmas Day and New Year's .

societies

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than in 16th place were eligible to participate, as well as four promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

From the beginning of the season there was a three-way battle between Monaco, Racing Paris and Reims, with the capital city having the best start with their "bomb storm" and leading the table by a maximum of four points until October - still without defeat; then, however, they gave too many points, especially in front of their own audience, and had to leave the autumn championship to Monaco. Defending champion Reims, until then still in close contact with the opponents, then lost two of his corset bars with playmaker Kopa and striker Fontaine due to serious injuries, and Monaco not only benefited from its own good defensive line and its home strength (in the principality the Monegasque only gave three points ab), but also from the slacking off of his two opponents. Paris came back, however, and was even ahead again in mid-May and tied with Monaco before the last match day - but on that day Monaco beat Valenciennes 1-0 and became champions, while Racing in Le Havre only drew and so on had to wait for the second title in Division 1 for 25 years .

The seasonal performance of the “Red Devils” from Rouen was remarkable; After a mixed start, the newcomer “opened the field from behind” and finished in fourth place, not only thanks to his stable defense. Another newcomer, however, had a bleak season: up front was Troyes' striker Keller, who scored almost half (23 of 52) of all goals of his team, almost on their own, while the defense degenerated into the "shooting gallery of the league". Before and after, hardly any other team in France's top division had 15 points behind the penultimate. Grenoble, Limoges and Valenciennes accompanied Troyes into Division 2 ; in their place, SO Montpellier and three teams from the north-east, FC Metz , FC Sochaux and Racing Strasbourg, added to the circle of the first division for the following season .
