The Estádio de Honra in the Centro Desportivo Nacional do Jamor , often called Estádio Nacional , is the national stadium of Portugal and belongs to the Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude . It is located about 20 kilometers west of Lisbon , in the valley of the Rio Jamor in Oeiras in the Lisbon district . The football stadium with a light-weight analytical system designed by the architect Miguel Jacobetty Rosa was opened by Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar on June 10, 1944 and now has around 37,500 seats.

The final of the Portuguese Football Cup has been held here regularly since 1946 . The highlight so far has been the final for the 1966/67 European Cup between Celtic Glasgow and Inter Milan .

The sports complex of the Estádio Nacional includes the stadium itself and a. also tennis courts and running tracks. Both the Portuguese Tennis Association and the Triathlon Association have set up their performance centers ( Centro de Alto Rendimento , CAR) here.

history

It was opened on June 10, 1944 after five years of planning and construction by the then dictator António de Oliveira Salazar . The stadium is located in the Complexo Desportivo do Jamor sports complex . During the development phase, several architects such as Francisco Caldeira Cabral, Konrad Wiesner, Jorge Segurado and Miguel Jacobetty Rosa, who was ultimately responsible for the design, were brought in. At that time , people were inspired by existing stadiums such as the Berlin Olympic Stadium . The stadium's spectator stands are laid out like a large bowl and extend from the main stand; behind both gates to the open side on the back straight. Except for the press stand, the venue is not roofed.

Since 1946, with a few exceptions, the finals of the Portuguese Football Cup have been played in the stadium. It also serves as a training location for the Portuguese national soccer team and for athletics . In 1967 the final of the European Cup between Celtic Glasgow and Inter Milan was held here. Celtic won the final 2-1 and was the first cup winner who was not from southern Europe (after Real Madrid , Benfica Lisbon , AC Milan and Inter Milan). The then team of Celtic was nicknamed Lisbon Lions ( German  Lisbon Lions ).

Since the stadium does not meet modern, European security requirements, the games of the Portuguese national football team are played in the modern stadiums built for the UEFA EURO 2004 such as in Lisbon ( Estádio da Luz , José Alvalade Stadium ) or Porto ( Estádio do Dragão ). In addition to sporting events, the stadium is also used for concerts. On September 25, 2007, the English pop rock group The Police performed as part of their world tour, The Police Reunion Tour . The Black Eyed Peas performed on May 30th 2010 at a music festival in Oeiras.
